History of the Emoji

Emoji date back to 1999 when they first appeared on Japanese cell phones. But it’s history goes further than that, because before there were emoji, there were emoticons. Emoticons were the pictorial representation of a facial expression by using things like punctuation marks, numbers, and letters. The earliest use of emoticons can be traced all the way back to the 17th century when a Slovak notary used one to indicate his satisfaction with the state of his town's financial records. In 1862, The New York Times also allegedly used an emoticon in this snippet of a speech transcript. And some of the first emoticons representing various moods were publish in an 1881 issue of Puck magazine.

So it’s clear that using symbols to represent facial expressions isn’t a modern concept, but it did become more popular with the advent of the computer. The first American Standard Code for Information Interchange emoticons, or ASCII for short which is essentially just an encoding standard, were written by Scott Fahlman in 1982, he thought they’d help people on a message board at Carnegie Mellon to distinguish serious posts from jokes by using the smiley face and frown face. And the symbols caught on...

Emoji and the Walkman (personal HI-FI stereo as a concept, although no longer tape based) are the two Japanese innovations that I could not imagine doing without today.

The Kik messenger is a bit dated, but despite only having 21 yellow emotion faces (not official Emojis in any way), many of its app-specific "smileys" had very original and distinct expressions that I wish I could express with Unicode emojis.

For example:
- There's five Unicode emojis with a tongue stuck out, but they're all smiling, we need one with a tongue out that's either serious or frowning to convey everything from "ew, yuck" to "sucks to be you, man" xP :P

- A kawaii yellow emoji that could effectively take the place of things like :3 and x3

- A confused emoji that's more shocked and less intellectual-looking (like the raised eyebrow emoji is); something more similar to the :S emoticon

- A blushing emoticon that's not smiling and more bashful and embarrassed, kind of like the "face with wide open eyes" but with more blush and perhaps looking off to the side embarrassed

- A menacing grin without the purple color and devil horns would be nice

- A zipped-lips emoji would be funny

- An angry red emoji with its mouth open shouting

I remember a children's activity calendar from 1977. On one page, it said, "In this circle, write the expression "ten over ten equals one" and turn it 90 degrees. Then in another circle, write "sixteen over sixteen minus zero" and rotate it.

I wish you could search for emojis. And I also wish that some emojis could be GIFs.
