You know what the best thing is about owning a VW Beetle is? Timeless design lines, simplicity and you learn how to become a mechanic. Oh and you cannot forget the smiles per miles you get when driving your Beetle.

I owned 4 early ‘60s VW bugs back in the day and loved them all, despite their quirks. Two of them were ‘62 sunroof bugs, one of which I decked out like Herbie. I also had a ‘66.

the door locks and power windows were a minor addon to the look of the car for mine. I love how people talk to me from the passenger window which I open from my driver's door...in an old-school beetle...

A Subaru Boxer engine will fit in a Bug, that will take care of the power issue . And everything else can be fixed just as easy . Other than the silly safety stuff, that you don't really need anyways .

How do aircooled vw mechanics marry & keep their cars??? Funny subject, but real. First husband hated them! Lost my cars! Now, replaced 2 cars and meeting potential people. Any advice, ideas, suggestions on how to know if this hobby can survive and or thrive w/marriage? Honey, “I’d prefer a stamped VW chrome original antenna for a 67, instead of jewelry”, hasn’t gone over well.

if you can't think in terms of "old school German wiring" then don't get a VW. (Bosch relay #s, and voltage drop issues)

I strongly disagree with you on reliability. My 1600 Beetle is the most reliable car I've ever had. I hardly ever open the deck lid. Why should I, when all is OK for months on end. And as for the lack of power, the 1600 engine provides pretty much enough power to push this little monster (I'm not sure about other less powerful VW aircooled engines). I can pass other cars and speed when I need to, I drive it on the highway, etc. Oh, I forgot to mention that my Beetle is a daily driver.
