Andy Stanley vs Jeff Durbin - Unhitching Christianity from the Old Testament?

Andy Stanley defends his book ‘Irresistible: Reclaiming the New that Jesus Unleashed for the World’ explaining why believers are not required to defend the Old Testament, but point to the events documented by the New Testament about Jesus - his life, death and resurrection.

Jeff Durbin of Apologia Studios responds to Andy, saying that Christians need to stand on the inerrancy of the whole Bible - Old and New Testament - when evangelising non-Christians.

Andy's argument seemed confused. Jeff's devotion to the text encouraged me to read the word even more.

When Andy says he has been working hard to make church "attractive" to those who would otherwise not have anything to do with church, my mind immediately goes straight to Emergent Church ideology/theology. Here's the deal: if your church is attracting people who are not hungry for God; who have no concept of their own nakedness and depravity, then you're not employing the full council of scripture. Churches who are being careful to stay solid doctrinally and theologically are the ones that generally will not be attractive to those who are perishing. It's not that we intentionally keep people away from church by being jerks. It's just that people who are truly hungry for the Lord are the only ones who will hear and receive the truth. Jesus said in Matthew 10:34 that he came not to bring peace, but a sword.

Andy seemed kind of disrespectful towards Jeff in the debate. At many times it is obvious that he stopped paying attention to what Jeff was saying. He keeps accusing Jeff of talking in circles while never really making his own point clearly.

I came to Christ ironically through the Old Testament more so than hearing the gospel. The Grace of God came over me through reading Isaiah which helped me to see the credibility of the Gospel. Then after exploring some of the OT for a couple of months I reached for the gospel.

I’m not a new Christian but I’ve struggled ALOT in trying to read the Bible. It’s only when I came to my lowest of lows and asked the Lord to come into me and show me all my sins so I could repent of them and prayerfully asked that he give me understanding as I read that the Holy Spirit touched my heart. So that, I’m on my second reading of Genisis in 5 weeks…. It’s a most amazing book!

1:08:25 is a horrifying moment to be honest. Andy shrugging his shoulders at the idea that God's Word is the ultimate authority. Andy is a prime example of today's progressive movement not having the courage to allow God's word to stand on it's own. He strips God's Word of it's authority and I think he should be afraid as a teacher. There will be eternal consequences for doing that.
