To me Coraline was never scary, it was just really interesting. When I was a kid I would always look for hidden doors around my house so it was just really nice to watch the movie and it just felt nostalgic.

I understand how this movie might have scared some children but to me the climax of the movie and coraline's parents trapped gave me a terrifying sense of desesperation and hopelesness. Like, a genuine fear of mine as a child was losing my parents and not being able to do anything about it. To me the aesthetics weren't frightening. But the atmosphere of loneliness after Coraline loses her family and is trapped under duress was a very real fear to me.
