Rockler sells a nice machined metal adjustable jig that centers dowel rod holes and guides the drill bit when drilling. I’ve used mine for years and love it. Very well made!

I’ll stick with my self centering doweling jig so that I don’t have to make one of these for each thickness of material and every size dowel.
