Sad part is that Big Mike (Gros Michel) tastes way better than regular Cavendish bananas. They’re not extinct, they just can’t be grown commercially as it’s too risky to have a whole harvest possibly wiped by a fungus

The problem behind this is that commercially grown bananas are genetically identical. This is devastating in terms of disease resistance.

The real issue is that in the US and Canada we only eat two types of banana, whereas in other countries like Brazil they sell 30+ types at the grocery store. We need more variety.

Thing is, the yellow bananas (Cavendish bananas) which are grown for the sole purpose of export, are basically clones of each other, so one disease can pretty much kill all of the bananas 'at once', which is what happened in the 60s/70s (around that time)
