The Americans breeded their dogs to look like the first dogs they imported (akita x gsd x mastiff/tosa/saint bernard) and didn't add new blood. The current American Akita looks exactly like the dogs that were imported in 1945. The Japanese dog is a recreation, bred to look like the 1900 dogs.
