There is a ton of great XC/trail bike MTB tires out there. Maxxis has some killer models to consider. The Ikon, Ardent, Ardent Race, Forekaster, Rekon, Aspen etc. You might be asking yourself, what tire should I get? Does it roll fast? How much does it weigh? Does it have enough grip? We try to answer these frequently asked questions and focus solely on Maxxis' lineup for XC (cross country) and lighter trail tires that you should be checking out. Whether you are a weight weenie like Jeff, or just want a fast-rolling tire but don't know what tire combination to run, we go over the best pairs and tread to run depending on what conditions you ride in. Cross-country mountain biking is still very popular and the spandex warriors still need tire recommendations. Press play, sit back and shave your legs while we learn you a thing or two on XC mtb tires.

At 3:07 mins, rider on trails, that is Van Dam Peak in San Diego, CA. I used to run that trail up to the old cement foundation at top. Small world. Thanks for memory.

Aspen in the rear and Rekon 2.25 in the front. While the Rekon is a bit more tire than the the aspen I was running up front, it has a bunch of grip at it’s disposal. It’s much more reliable when racing in sandy soil composition which is very prevalent in the Southeast and Southern Piedmont region of North Carolina. The Aspen hooks up surprisingly well through chattery corners despite it’s extremely low profile tread and no suspension out back.

wonder how many people know the real name for Maxxis is Chang Shin Tyre's
probably known in the UK back in the 90's for the cheap tyres fitted to raleigh cycles, Maxxis was the new name when they entered the more expensive tyre market aimed at sports/race cyclists and car tyres as it sounded more western

I’m running a 120mm travel xc oriented bike.. Ikon on the back, Ardent on the front. Ardent is good in all conditions and surfaces up front, the Ikon can be a bit slippery on wet/damp rock, otherwise it performs admirably

I’ve stuck 2 Ardent races 26 x2.2 on a Riese and Muller Multicharger. Let’s see how that goes!

Jeff, what I9 wheels/rims are you running on the 4.5? I am looking for something wider than stock but not a whole lot of room in the rear end of the the 4.5. Thanks for any input!
