🔸Do you love going underground cities?

🔸If you want to do this during your Roman holidays, there’s no better place to start than the Stadium of Domitian, which is beneath the modern Piazza Navona!

🔸Going underground is great to escape the summer heat of the city, as well as taking shelter during rainy days 🌧

🔸Enjoy this Virtual Tour of the Stadium of Domitian while I show you this fantastic UNESCO World Heritage site 🤩

🔸The Stadium of Domitian used to be an ancient Roman stadium where the sports imported from the Greek Olympics were taking place: javelin throw, foot run, pankration, discus throw, long jump..

🔸However you have to imagine that in Ancient Rome these sports were not as popular as the chariot races and the gladiator fights, where more action and blood was included 😅 Tastes of the time!

🔸But this was surely a grandiose building, where up to 30000 Romans of the time gathered to support their favorite athletes and collecting memories of these special events.. like we do today in our modern stadiums 😊

🔸Have you ever been underground Rome? And most of all, beneath Piazza Navona?

Thank you for this; I never knew this is available. I have been in Rome, and Piazza Navona on quite a few occasions. Next time this is on the list.

This is so brilliant, teaching us about these hidden gems. The next time Scotland play Italy in rugby all this is on my itinerary

I asked my architecture prof why the street level was so much higher now in Rome than it was in the days of the Empire and his answer to me was "the dust of the ages." That was a satisfactory answer, although I still had trouble imagining all of that accumulation over 2000 years. Truly amazing.
