“Ride On King Jesus” is an African American Spiritual which places us at the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. In this song, the singer and the King are joined together on a journey, a journey that is difficult but continues forward anyway. Notice that the lyrics say “no man can a-hinder me”and not “no man can a-hinder Thee”?Here the singer, even though imposed with a heavy burden, is riding the horse with Jesus and together they proceed to ultimate victory unstopped. Imagine singing this song as a slave knowing that you are “riding” with Jesus through the difficulties of life.
Now you might wonder, where does the idea of Jesus riding on a “horse” come from? The story as we usually hear it on Palm Sunday has Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, but the lyrics of this song say that Jesus “rides on a milk-white horse.” On that first Palm Sunday, Jesus entered Jerusalem in humility on a symbol of peace. The Book of Revelation says “I looked, and there in front of me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow in his hands. He was given a crown. He rode out like a hero on his way to victory." (Revelation 6:2 NIRV) The rider on the white horse is symbolic of the Lord Jesus Christ who will overcome all that is evil and set up the Kingdom of God upon earth. Thus a white horse symbolizes victory. This song foreshadows the final victory that is won by Jesus.
Another question that may arise is from the lyric “The river of Jordan he did cross.” Jesus was baptized in the river Jordan and he did cross the river many times in his ministry, but there is no mention of crossing the river to enter Jerusalem. For the slave, the river of Jordan became the Ohio River or the Mississippi, or another body of water that had to be crossed on the journey to freedom. Leaving dry land and taking to the water was a common strategy to throw pursuing bloodhounds off of one’s trail. But even more important to them was the promise that just as Joshua divided the Jordan River for the Israelites to cross into Canaan, we all will cross over into the eternal Promised Land. Jesus, by entering Jerusalem, dying on the cross and rising from the dead, crosses over Jordan into heaven where we shall all someday “wear a robe” and “see King Jesus sitting on a throne.”

Two years ago on November 5, 2017 my life was changed...long story short I have a pacemaker now....but the devil didnt stop there ...I started suffering from manic depression and anxiety...I went completely out of work in December of 2017, when I tell you it was war ...it was war ...I lose 87 pounds. ..I slept in my closet. ..scared to go in public. ..no music ..no TV ...just the feeling of death and crying everyday...but God had other plans ...and this song right here was one of many that gave me the passion and strength to fight ...I Love the song ...everytime I watch this video I get chills and the holy spirit takes over ...Amazing choir ...thank you
