I absolutely agree, Rolex Explorer is perfect for all occasions and for any look.

For me it is the Rolex no date Sub, Ref 14060, it is extremely versitile, durable, and while still offering a modern caliber, the case is more sleek and in line with more vintage examples.

If I had to choose out of my collection, it would be my Seiko SARB033. It's a fantastic one-watch that can be dressed up and down. I wear it on a perlon in the summer, leather during the fall, or just the bracelet all year round. Its thickness is fair, the black dial is versatile & sleek, and the movement is good enough for me. On top of that, I got it to celebrate my undergrad :D

My one watch choice is the Omega Aqua Terra grey dial ( 2018) on the bracelet. I wear it for work, play, and dress occasions. It is tough and although it has scratches, they are not easily visible. It keeps great time and is anti- magnetic ( Great for when I have to see a patient in the MRI scanner). My wife loves it and always comments on how good it looks.
I have even had strangers comment in the watch regarding how good it looks.
They are always curious about what brand it is. They know it is not a Rolex but cannot readily identify the maker. They are always surprised and intrigued when I say that it is an Omega.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas. The three included bracelet/strap options give it ultimate versatility and all from a high end watch maker

My father bought the watch of my choice (a Camel Trophy chronograph) over 30 years ago when I was a kid, then gave it to me when I was like 14 or 15, and I am still loving to wear it. He passed away 13 years ago, so that watch means a lot to me. I know it hasn't been expensive, but its actual value for me can't be expressed in numbers.

My ‘one watch’ would be the Tudor BB58 blue. Why?
1). Right at home in every situation. From the beach to the board room, it never looks out of place
2). It’s extremely high quality, durable and reliable. I have confidence that this piece can be on my wrist for the rest of my life without worry of it failing
3). It has excellent water resistance. For a ‘one watch’, it HAS to be able to handle swimming/diving
4). Perfect price point. My ‘one watch’ will accompany me on all my life’s journeys. So it can’t be like wearing Fort Knox on your wrist and attracting unwanted attention. At around $4, 000 It’s not a huge deal if it were to get stolen. Can’t say the same with a $60, 000 Nautilus.

I could go on and on….. but those are my big reasons.

Great pick, but in my opinion you need at least a date function. My daily wearer right now is the 126300 datejust and it certainly is a candidate for a one watch collection. Of course, you can also opt from something cheaper, but at least it should be sporty, sleek, have a date function, that'll cover most important criteria for a one watch collection.

The Cartier Santos (Medium size): My reasoning, the Cartier Santos has been in style for 100+ years. It looked good during the roaring 20's, Great Depression, WW2, then skip over to the 1980's, 90's, yeah, people still liked it.

Plus, many of the most popular watches are based on the Cartier Santos. Even if you wear it in a futuristic setting, I feel like the Santos will still be a classic watch.

Will this be the one luxury watch I get, maybe, I'm looking at the Omega Aqua terra, but if I had to go back 50+, or go back 50 years, I would get the Santos.

No. Come'on. There's no date on the Explorer.

My one watch collection (and ultimate grail) is the yellow gold saxonia moonphase from A. Lange & Söhne. The symetry, the balance of the elements, the size and this date window are simply marvelous in my opinion. If I'm not mistaken, it's the one you wear in your intro right ? (Or the rose gold, please correct me if I'm wrong guys !)

Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra GMT Worldtimer 43mm (with both rubber strap and SS bracelet). It’s on the larger and busier side, yes, but no other watch has ever resonated with me as much as this one. It’s a beautiful reminder that the world is my oyster*… to continue breaking boundaries because there is always more to explore*.

The Explorer is a great choice as the great 1-watch collection but I still gotta go with the timeless Datejust. That piece will ALWAYS be a classic for both casual and formal occasions.

Seiko springdrive snowflake: it combines the best of both worlds, quartz and automatic to achieve a masterpiece movement. Plus the dial is stunning

Tag Monaco. Just a beautiful watch and if it’s good enough for Steve McQueen, it’s good enough for me.

Black Bay 36

Basically all the same reasons you went with the Explorer, but at a fraction of the cost with a dial design I prefer.

My one-watch-collection would have to meet the following criteria: a fair bit of water resistance (100m will suffice), should have a bracelet for summer and sports, should feature a timeless and tested design, should have a date complication since I need it regularly, should be around 36mm for obvious reasons (since this is a channel about timeless menswear, we can speak freely here: 40mm+ don't do most men's wrists a favor). Oh, and it shouldn't be vintage for peace of mind.
All things considered and even though I'm not a real Rolex guy: it must be the Datejust 36 - since few other upmarket brands feature 36mm watches in their portfolio.
The current Cartier Santos medium finishes as a close 2nd, only because of the missing date.
