For me, I always assumed that it was the sudden immense power that it gave him which made him more evil. Think Socrates and the ring of Gyges which granted invisibility. Socrates concluded that, no matter who they were before, if you give someone sudden incredible power that they would no longer choose to operate within socially acceptable morality.

It was seeing Naruto grow stronger than him and the curse mark and feeling like he wasn't getting strong enough to catch up to Itachi then Itachi beat him up broke his arm then put him in the genjutsu seeing the clan did over and over and Itachi telling him he needed more hate and to kill his friend and orochimaru trained him and made him fight thousands then he killed Itachi and found out the truth and that he should've understood Itachi I stead of hating him, he remembered his love for his brother and turned his hate towards danzo and the kages and started killing at the kages summit and killing danzo turned him completely

Uh... Are we going to forget that his entire reason for continuing on was to kill his brother? He was evil before he had the curse mark, we just didn't know enough about his character to know it yet.
