Why Planes Don't Fly Over Tibet ✈️ No-Fly Zone 🚫

Why do all the airplanes in the world avoid flying over this zone? This zone is quite huge - more than 5 times the size of France 🇫🇷, and if we look at a flight radar, we can see an extensive area empty of airplanes. This is the Tibetan Plateau 🏔️. There are three main reasons why planes do not fly here. Firstly, Tibet is the highest plateau in the world, with an average elevation of about 14,800 feet. It is home to some of the highest mountains on the planet, including Mount Everest 🏔️. Commercial aircraft fly at an altitude of about 33,000 feet ✈️, but in case of an emergency, such as a cabin depressurization, they need to quickly descend to 10,000 feet, which is almost impossible in Tibet because of its height. Secondly, the weather conditions in Tibet are often extremely unpredictable 🌬️. Strong winds, turbulence, and sudden weather changes make flying over this region dangerous and challenging. Finally, the third reason is the lack of sufficient airports for emergency landings in the area 🛬. There are only five airports in Tibet, making flights over this region extremely risky.

In 1996 I was on a flight from the Netherlands to Hong Kong via Bangkok. Early in the morning local time the pilot came on the speaker and said: if you're on the left side of the aircraft would will see sunrise over Everest and K2. Breathtaking.

My father flew over this range during WWII over 50 times. It was the most dangerous mission of all the theaters. It was called flying the Hump. Actually they didn't fly over, they flew threw it sometimes with only 100 ft on either side of their wings. God Bless them.

Airliners have 10- 12 minutes of oxygen for passengers so the planes have to get to 10, 000 feet or less in that time so you don't get dead passengers. Cargo, and military aircraft don't have this limitation so are able to fly in high terrain regions such as this. Another region is over the Andes with very limited passenger operations over the range.

*Short answer for the tiktok mind* :
mountains are pretty high, the weather is bad, and there is no good place for an emergency landing

While in Nepal, our group of about 18 got to fly over Mt. Everest, actually over the entire mountain range. Right down the middle of that red circle. The daily flights are always scheduled early in the morning, before the mountain winds pick- up. It's those winds that makes flying in large commercial planes off limits. And create extremely dangerous conditions for local small planes. Interestingly, everyone on the plane had a windows seat, the pilot and co pilot answering questions from the passengers. A once in a lifetime experience, I will never forget. That mountain range is huge, it's difficult to identify Everest from the rest, all the mountains huge, the entire range's tops above the clouds.

There are flights between Lasha and Nepal, a short but beautiful flight. You can see Mount Everest clearly.

That seems like a very good reason to not fly over the plateau 👍

In WWII, pilots delivering supplies from India to China were given combat time because flights over "the hump" were so dangerous.

Amazing to know that there is one part of the world where you can experience complete silence and the sky isn't scarred by vapor trails. Would love to spend a week in the centre of that region.

Says "all planes avoid this area" proceeds to say theres airports in the area.
