It’s actually not agreed upon at all. Most historians today estimate about 15 were eaten by crocodiles and the rest starved or were wounded and then some dead bodies were eaten. The man who made this legend famous was proven to not even be on the island when it happened.

Forrest almost never gets these stories right; at least it’s not as bad as when he said Japanese soldiers were fighting on Guam until 2002.
Essentially 1000 men died during retreat. Crocs certainly one of the mortality factors during the retreat- but there is nothing to suggest they were slaughtering hundreds of soldiers. They might’ve gotten a couple dozen (according to witness testimony), but not remotely close to the entire 1000 that died.

My great uncle was in iwo jima etc.. when they got there 2 days before they thought the big green machine was coming kinda like the scene from watchmen... So instead of surrendering there was no resistance and every few days or so theyd come too a cliff and there would be like 600 plus dead soldiers would be dead from suidide, which was more honorable than He said they didnt have too fight etc..., .
