Living in Japan There is factor not mentioned that makes this more believable.
There are no alligators or Crocodiles in The country of Japan. As well as No big poisonous snakes. So in they’re lives Pre-TV and internet. No reason to fear fresh water at all.
These creatures attacking them from the water may be how the idea of Godzilla was introduced😅

I have a true story kinda like this.

My uncle has a small piggery in their own village near the river. One day he got sick and was rushed to the hospital. His 2 mother pigs were about to give birth and was screaming and wailing in pain. It was his 3rd day in the hospital almost unconscious cause all those medicines puts him to sleep. The night of birth, 6 men tried to steal the mother pigs and piglets. However, as the mother pigs were so hungry, they ran over the men, bit and ate them. The driver of the van (in which they tried to carry the pigs and piglets) escaped and looked for help. His 5 men were found massacred, parts were eaten, one was only with his left arm left, and later on found out that the mother pigs also ate some of their piglets to survive.

It was all true and my uncle was forced to slaughter his pigs and close his business.
