How To Make A Turning Saw By Hand - Mahogany

Показать описание
Made with all hand tools from stuff found around the shop.

The lumber I used was a strip of Mahogany that was 1.5" x .75" about 4' long.

the Stretcher was cut 2.5" longer then the blade so that there was a 1" tenon on eather end and .25" from eather end of the blade to both beams.

Both beams were cut from what was left from the stick of Mahogany. The beams were about 14" long this would give about 7" between the blade and stretcher.

the Blade was made from a Band-saw blade. it was cut to length with ten-snips.

The connecting hardware came from an old hack saw. and was easily re-purposed for this Turning Saw.

All of the shaping was done with a chisel, Spoke Shave, Rasps, and files.

It was finished with boiled linseed oil and past wax.

I get the same feels about working with wood. it excites me and calms me all at the same time. I love hand made tools.

lol. "the boring part"! Nice. I like the recipe too, 'interesting grain" and "random length", best soup I've tasted all day. I love making something from what is on hand and it comes out so nice. I believe it a blessing from above. Good work done wright.

So happy I discovered your channel.
Love your passion for hand tools.
Making a turning saw has been on my list for a while as well so it’s on the short list.

I haven’t seen this one. I really like these type of video instructions that help us build tools for the shop using our hand tools. Great job. Nice seeing how the kids have grown - Arthur is pretty small in this one.

I made sort of a keyhole saw from a reciprocating saw (sawzall) blade with a homemade wooden handle, and ended up really liking it. Of course it's a pull cut, but it's very small, light, and easy to control, and of course you can easily change the blades if it gets dull or you want a different TPI.
I love repurposing stuff!

Beautiful build!! 😁👍

Thanks for the idea of using hardware from an old hacksaw. One suggestion. Making different length cross bars would allow for different sawblades as needed

Found one at an estate sale. Only part missing is the tightening stick. Stressing over getting a piece to match until I saw yours. Think I can handle making that one piece 😉

Searching for how to make a bow saw/turning saw and this was the best one I found. (Paul Sellers has one but his is a frame saw, not a turning saw). Very nice. Thanks. Because of this I have subscribed to your channel.

this is the first time i have seen any of your videos and you explain the steps so easy. I have been wanting to make a frame saw but i thought it would be hard and expensive buying the blade and hardware. I never thought of just recycling a old hacksaw or using a bandsaw blade. I have a old hacksaw in my junk drawer, all i need is a blade. Thank you keep making the great videos. +Wood By Wright

This looks like a similar build to what I'll be doing soon. I have a 21" Bahco bow/buck saw replacement blade. I'll be make a take-down buck saw for my pack, for when I go out in the woods. I'd love to make a folding one, where the blade stays attached, and the two sides have a slit in them, so the blade can hide in the handles. I don't have a tool that can make that long thin slit in the wood, so I'm skipping that step. This video gave me a good basis for my project, with the exception of the blade attachment.

Impressed with using a brace to drill through the steel bandsaw blade. I used a cheap mains powered electric drill & ruined several bits before reading that folk normally "blue" the ends (heat them up & then let them cool) to soften them for drilling - but you didn't even need to do that! BTW That chisel looked more like 6mm or more than 3mm ;) Glad you used non-chemical boiled linseed oil (I use raw), hope the wax is safe too (I make own, no toxins). Cute kids.
