When I want a “cosy” read, I find myself turning to books where the characters have huge hurtles to overcome and do so. My favorite book as a child was The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner, about a sibling group who live on their own after running away. As an adult I tend to turn to the fantasy genre for comfort as the characters usually have extreme crises to handle. The other books that I would turn to for comfort would be those with strong settings. These are books that I am drawn to normally, and would return to reread knowing I would be lost in and therefore comforted. The Secret History would be at the top of that list. The books that most people would consider cosy reads would not be where I would turn to, I would read those in normal times.

A cozy comfort basket?! I want one! But since it's better to give than to receive- I would give one to my sister. In her basket, I would put: A Town Called Solace by Mary Lawson (her latest, but I love all her books), and Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell (god it was good). I would also include some herbal tea and a bunch of healthy snacks (she's been struggling with her health lately). And I would make her one of those chunky knit blankets, which I recently learned how to make. The hand-knitting is so relaxing and fun. And a book that restores my faith in humanity: Plainsong by Kent Haruf. It's one of my all time favorites!

Loved this video, thank you, Alice! 😊

Cozy Gift Basket would include…
Some Oolong tea, some yummy cinnamon tea, and a variety of others, add a colorful, generous sized coffee mug, some salted caramels, some dark chocolates and some yummy shortbread cookies. Warm, fluffy socks, a few pretty book marks, a few classic memorable books, such as, “All Creatures Great and Small” by James Herriot, and a memorable chunky book, such as, “The Far Pavilions” by M.M. Kay, or “A Suitable Boy” by Vikram Seth…
or maybe, a well loved book such as, “A Gentleman in Moscow” by Amor Towles. 🧡📚

(By the way, Richard Osman’s next book titled, “The Bullet That Missed” will be coming out in September.) 😊

My favorite cozy read is The Cat Who series by Lillian Jackson Braun. It's an older cozy mystery series but just makes me feel like visiting old friends. If I made a cozy basket it would include a soft blanket, tea or coffee, some chocolate or gummie candy, a bookmark, stickers, and of course a book tailored to the recipient.

This video is also like a “start here” sorta video for your channel i feel like, it’s so fitting.

Two years ago I gifted all my besties blankets with their fave colours out of the blue and i find it the cosiest gift that you can include in such a basket with some chocolate things and a minty face mask (so refreshing, my new discovery). I’ve also never realised how cute this basket 🧺 emoji is, i can almost smell the fresh laundry inside it wow 🦋🍓

I think The House on the Cerulean Sea was kind of comforting and had a taste of faith in humanity with the different kinds of characters learning to live together. I also just read Letters From Skye that had a comforting feel to me because of the epistolary way it was written.

Love this tag and your selections Alice! Some of my go to comfort/cozy reads are the Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley (amazing audiobook narrator as well), Harry Potter, the Chronicles of Narnia, The Smoke Hunter, and anything by Sarah Addison Allen. 💗

My favorite cozy reread is The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder. As a kid, I read it every time they cancelled school for snow. I still do sometimes!

I think you're right with the Richard Osman books, they are definitely cosy! I read Humankind by Rutger Bregman last year and that definitely made me feel better about people, I'd recommend it. For nature writing I recommend Kathleen Jamie, especially Findings.
I know my next-door neighbour, we chat in the garden if we see each other and I know her name, but not well enough to go round her house. I don't know the ones across the street by name at all.

Hi Alice... this was fun! A "nature" book that you might like is The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating. I know it might sound like a book about snails would be boring lol, but it's really good!

Thanks Alice! This was such a cosy video ! I think my basket will contain « major pettigrew’s last stand », a collection of stories of « mullah nasreddin », « How Much Land Does a Man Need? & Other Stories » by Tolstoy, a book with the paintings of claude monet, a book of calligraphy by hassan massoudy, color pencils and paper. Actually I took a similar basket to work as a present for my colleagues, to share things that make me happy. And for a little while we went out of time and reconnected after nearly 2 years of working majorly from home. Thanks for sharing your basket, I will add some of your books for the next time !

Really enjoyed this tag - perfect weekend watching. Thank you for all the recommendations! The thursday murders club books sound like the perfect rainy day comfort reads. The "genre" comfort reads made me think about the platform storygraph. Have you heard about this goodreads-alternative? I'm currently trying it out and you're able to filter books by moods etc, which is great if your in the mood for a new potential comfort read. Curious about other peoples opinion on it. :) For me comfort reads are almost always fantasy childrens books (harry potter, percy jackson etc) or books set in simple everyday life in the past (for example Persephone books). I guess anything to escape the present reality. :D
