Drinks from Skyrim | How to Drink

Real world versions of drinks from Skyrim, as served by Talen-Jei at the Bee and the Barb in Riften! I used to be an adventurer, like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

Skyrim is a few years old now but remains hugely popular, and it boasts a thriving community of players and modders who are keeping the thing going and going and going. I haven't played it myself in a bit, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent in Skyrim, and I've been thinking about making drinks from it for a long time. It doesn't hurt that "Drinks from Skyrim" is one of the most common requests I get, so let's do it. Looking at Skyrim there's a few options I can go with, Skooma comes to mind of course, but since Skyrim actually has three legitimate cocktails in its setting, it seems silly to start with anything else, so I'll have to save the Skooma for another day. I'm instead going to focus on the drinks served by Talen-Jei, the bartender and owner of the Riften bar called The Bee and The Barb. He's got three speciality cocktails on the menu, and they all sound pretty great, so I'm recreating those here.

Didn't start the episode with "You're finally awake!", opportunity missed.

Something fun about Skyrim, the recipe for Honningbrew Mead that you steal actually works as a mead recipe. I made it, made about 30 bottles of it in one batch, and it fermented out to 17%.

I love that Greg is comfortable enough to make an “Arrow to the Knee” joke in 2020

Skooma: Soak a bunch of heroin in vodka, add butterfly pea blossom tea, simple syrup, lemon juice. Tada! Skooma.

Hey, you. You're finally awake. You were trying to out drink Drinkmaster Greg, right? Walked right into that Imperial ambush, same as us, and that drunk over there.

Greg: *Does his Talen-Jei voice*
Me: “Sounds like a filthy Thalmor to me. 😡”

Love Talen-Jei. The argonian boys in Riften are the best boys. Madesi is just a humble jewellery maker and Talen owns a tavern with his wife. How can you not like them they’re so pleasant

Sometimes I wonder: Can Argonians, being resistant to poisons, get drunk?

Sujamma is definitely one of the very common (since Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind) dark elf drinks you come across. Morrowinds common drinks are Flin (the Imperial whiskey), Sujamma, Mazte, Greef, and Shein. Shein is a local wine of Vvardenfell that is brewed from comberry (like cranberries but look more like holly). Greef is a brandy made from comberry. Mazte is super cheap, common and brewed from fermented saltrice (a dark nutrious grain grown in Morrowind; looks like a darker brown rice). So for awhile Sujamma didn't really give you hints as to what it is made with or type of alcohol. But Elder Scrolls Online has a recipe your character can find and make called "Sujamma" whose ingredients are: Barley, comberry and lemon.

It would of been awesome to awkwardly zoom into your face in classic Bethesda fashion while you read the drinks. Add a couple of glitch effects in post and voila we are in The Elder Scrolls.

Im going to ask the question everyone is wanting to know, when are you going to make a book of all these recipes?!

6:02 nightshades are one of those wonderful foods that fall into the category of “poisonous to most species...and delicious to humans.” Though usually when people just say “Nightshade” they mean “Deadly Nightshade, ” which is one of the very few examples that are seriously toxic to humans. Other examples of foods that are poisonous to most animals but humans are fine with: Carrots, parsnips etc. are actually in the same family as Hemlock (this is why one shouldn’t eat wild carrots unless one has a really good botanical background), chili peppers evolved capsaicin to keep animals that aren’t birds (immune) from eating them, the sulfur compounds in Alliums (Shallots, Onions, and Garlic) are toxic to most species and the entire reason we eat them. Humans are honestly just really hardy.

This makes me wish someone opened a Skyrim themed tavern IRL that only sold drinks inspired by the Skyrim/Elder Scrolls alcohol...
