Dave takes you step-by-step through his video editing, rendering, and transcoding process for an EEVblog video using Sony Vegas / MovieStudio & Handbrake x264.
Note this is NOT a tutorial, it's a mostly live walkthrough of editing an actual EEVblog video, so lots of waffle.
Dave's gear:
Sennheiser EW 100 ENG G3-G Wireless Microphone
Aless 520USB Studio Monitor Speakers:
These would be OK too if on a budget:
Samson C01U USB Microphone:
Samson SR850 Studio Headphones:

Dave, I'd like to see a "Making of video "for this video.
Title could be "How EEVblog does a video on the making of EEVblog videos"

If you think that's bad, when I do my videos I'm always making mistakes, pausing, stammering and stuttering about all over the place, often taking up to 50 takes before I finally get things right, not to mention I rarely shoot in sequence, then sometimes I have to re-record parts of my live voice over! It takes forever to edit one of my videos. Usually I chop up the audio and take out all the mistakes and pauses but still have the video going as normal. As my face is normally off screen you cannot see me talking, so I don't need to worry too much about keeping the video and audio in sync, I only keep the video and audio in sync when needed.

You're right about not needing high speed drives for video editing, I actually don't use my internal drive at all during the process, other than as a temporary stop between my iPhone (I don't use a special camera, just the one in my phone, I have it record at 1080p 60fps) and the external USB 3 drive that holds all the video files. I also export the final video to this derive as well. I know it works well, because I can export a 30 min. video in around 10 minutes or less, an hour long one will take about 20.

Many thanks for the behind the scenes look Dave. I use pretty much the same set up (and have all the same gripes about Vegas). I spend forever editing my videos though mostly because I have to shoot everything ten times in order to get out a single sentence that makes sense.

Dave you can use vegas as a frame server for handbrake. In one step to the final video.
Debugmode frameserver.

Dave I've found that scaling in Vegas works alot better if you use the 16:9 preset and then adjust the zoom and position. If you do it your way without preapplying the preset then it is more difficult to work with.

Thanks for sharing this. it's always nice to get a view behind the camera, so to speak. I can see that your process is a bit related to mine. I normally do one-shots and just let the camera/cameras roll. However, when I know I make mistakes I make sure it's either seen or heard in the clip. Like a white paper over the lense or a handclap to get a "peak" in the audio. Vegas is indeed a robust editing software with some quirks you brought up Dave, that I totally share. Everything that has to do with scale/positioning etc, my gosh it takes time to get right. But on the other hand, it's the fine work you put into editing that makes the difference at the end of the day. Anyhow, this was very interesting! Keep up the good work and stay positive! :)

normalise will bring up the volume to the highest peak, so if you have 1 really loud transient already hitting 0.5db nothing happens when you normalise. It can only bring it up based on the highest level.

Thank you for this video! I downloaded a 30 day trial of MovieStudio Platinum and I am really happy. Adobe and DaVinci Resolve has very steap learning curve for an amateur like me. Easy to start and make the basic editing.

Here's an arrow vegas/movie studio can use:

I use it as a preset for text generators.

"I've have all my raw footage from video number one. I've still got it stored on various hard drives and other things around."
Other things?
The raw hex chiseled into stone tablets are a great _long term_ backup, and a great use for the bunker!
Not a portable format though. ;P

odd, audio is out of sync with the video... seems youtube has broken something.

Absolutely agree with you at the 37:00 mark where you discuss the overlaying.
Went to make a video for the community channel of a popular YouTube network and wanted to add in a zoom and pan, it wasn't necessary but I wanted to do it. It ended up me giving up trying to get my head around the tool and just bypassing the part I wanted zoomed in and panning.

I'm going to send some Sony video editing stuff your way to try. Been planning on sending it a while now, this video finally got me moving towards the post office. Hope you'll like it!

Thanks for the peek behind the curtain.

@13:48: If you're keen on normalizing your audio, you might want to look into using ffmpeg's loudnorm filter after you finish cutting your video. (I know Youtube doesn't like posting links in comments, but the appropriate search terms should be clear.)

@49:42: Regarding hardware acceleration for video encoding, the ffmpeg developers have benchmarked this. You're right; there's no benefit to attempting to using GPU parallel processing when encoding video.

Dave.. When I get on my proper computer on the morning (its 4am at the mo) I'll send you a little script I picked up for Vegas Pro.. It may work on Vegas too. You just add it to Vegas and create put a lil' shortcut in your top toolbar.. With one click it will disable resample on all clips.

Cheers
John
