Chris’s Guinness Bread

Recipe

300g | 2 1/2 cups Whole-wheat flour
100g | 3/4 cup Plain Flour
100g | 1 1/4 cup of Oats
1 1/2 tsp of Baking Soda
1/2 tsp of Baking Powder
1 tsp of Salt
1 tbsp of melted butter
2 tbsp of treacle or substitute with molasses
200ml | 3/4 cup of Guinness
250ml | 1 cup of Buttermilk

You can add 2 tsp of brown sugar if you want to add some sweetness.

You can also use natural or Greek yoghurt as a substitute for buttermilk. Just thin it out a little with a drop of water. Alternatively you can add about 1 1/2 tbsps of vinegar or lemon juice to 250ml of regular milk. Stir and let it stand for about 10 minutes before adding it.

Use a 1.5L or a 2Ib loaf tin.Bake at 200C | 392F for about 40-45 minutes

Fan oven 180C | 356F

The bread should make a hollow sound at the bottom when you tap it. You can also use a thermometer to check the internal temperature. Anything between 94C-100C would be ideal

I make Irish Guinness bread quite often and always add some crushed walnuts - delicious!!

I live in Dennark and had no Guinness at Home. Used a Danish Christmas Beer. Its Dark and sweet and kids usually drink it With their Risengrød(Rice pudding With sugar and cinnemin (kanel) for Christmas. In The oven now! Marian

People in the US dont know what treacle is. Dark or Blackstrap molasses is the only alternative.

With the amount of ingredients in it compared to my recipe for Irish soda bread I would have expected it to make a larger loaf. Will give it a go though. Could you please tell me the difference between wholemeal flour and wholemeal bread flour. At the moment my 2 local supermarkets have a stock of a few different types of flours, including spelt and rye, but no basic wholemeal for me to make my weekly brown soda bread 😖

Hello Chris! I'm going to make this today and was wondering if substituting in a bit of rye-flour and adding some vital wheat gluten would work? Do you think the VWG is a waste? Thanks!

If you don't drink alcohol, what do you do with the leftover beer? I hate to be wasteful. Is there enough there for two loaves?

I added 2 level teaspoons of brown sugar a dash of vanilla extract and 50g crushed walnuts.
