The big difference is in the environments and materials examples not necessarily the player models. The colors pop way more. They said they still want your character to look like your character.

I think the main thing is that FF14 explicitly didn't change the player models too much to avoid people hating their new characters. I think they could have upped the graphical fidelity a lot on all races if they really needed to, but it'd be at a risk of changing how people saw their characters. WoW changed their character models and I know a decent amount of people saw the new orc/etc models and thought they looked a lot goofier than the old models and didn't really like the change.

If you want to know the difference, look at the eyes. They look and feel flat before but now look a bit more real and not just painted onto the model. You can notice it on the hair and horns but it's easy to miss

YoshiP noted that its a mild grapical update and don't expect too much.
Its does have better hair details and new and better facial texture map with better lighting interaction.
Don't quite remember it right, but the last big update (or this upcoming update) was Housing capacity expansion thanks to new server farm.

One thing to keep in mind is that this is an mmo, which means they need to show a lot of characters and other assets at the same time. A little improvement here and there really adds up when applied to who knows how many characters and objects (especially to gear textures and environments, not seen in this clip). They tried to make an mmo with the best looking character models of all time before, and we all know how that ended up.

Unfortunately fade transitions are never the best way to show incremental changes like this, overall it's a nice update

It may not seem like a significant change, but in a crowded area with various environmental factors, it will be quite noticeable.

the biggest update is in the lighting and shading of the environments and how those affect your character,
people often heavily underestimate just how big of an influence "good lighting" is, to making a game look good

I think they've played it very safe for a good reason. When WoW did its character model revamps there were a lot of people, mostly people who played dwarves, forsaken and humans logging in after a prepatch going "why doesn't my character look like my character anymore". Not even "this is a bad model". Simply "this is not my character anymore" and after a decade+ with said character you dont want to see a patch suddenly change it forever in a way you dont like and will always be staring you in the face.

There's nothing surprising about the graphics update, we already saw what it was going to look like months ago, now we just have a few more examples.

You can´t change it too much.

The character's appearance must still be relatable to the players and not change too much.
With WoW, for example, I found the changes in some races too blatant and not as tangible as before.

Accounting for the fact that they still intend for the new expansion to be playable on PS4, I'm pretty okay with this graphical update.
The PS4 audience is a pretty large part of the playerbase, so I'm guessing they can't just ditch that console to add in a substantial graphics update comparable to the graphics of FF16 or something.

I'm more excited to see the new areas and the new classes though, this little touch up is a nice extra thing to enjoy lol

You notice the changes in characters like the Lala's and Mi'qote's because of the bigger eyes you can really see the increase in material reflections and the shaders, but ALSO keep in mind you're gonna really see the improvements in actual gameplay BECAUSE the materials(like glossier reflective eyes, skin textures, etc) show off better with the new lighting, so when you move your character around you're gonna see how the light changes as you turn and move your character, so it IS definitely an improvement. I personally wish they made it even more polygons and such but...

Its much more clearer now compared to the old one which is pixelated a bit. Since its early development its really hard to say something.

People have to keep in mind that not everyone is rolling a high end computer to play FF14. Some people have low to mid grade computer set ups that can't handle UE5 tier graphical designs.

People have to remember the fact that they have to make it able to run on those old PS4 and PS4 pro after the update (I don't know about other Data Centers, but a lot of Asian including JP player's still running this game on old consoles). Due to this, Yoshi P can only do so much with the game engine and the new textures. It's possible that the devs can make extra graphic improvments and upgrades on PC version, but I doubt the possibility since I guess Yoshi P won't allow such differences on gaming experience between platforms (especially when people are paying roughly the same price on all platforms).

The recommended PC specs after 7.0 update are said to be RTX2060 and i7-9700(non K), it surely is some old GPU and CPU by today's standard, but it's still a huge jump comparing with the current recommended specs. Although the upgrade will most likely not to affect me (13600K, 4070Ti), around 10 of my friends in XIV had to try their best to upgrade their PC with their super tight budgets. (some of them even playing this game with old second hand 1050 + 3rd gen i5 under 720p).

FFXIV used to be able to run on PS3 too, Yoshi P's team took ages to make sure that most player had upgrade their consoles to PS4 or PC, and then finally ended its support. So it's possible there will be another upgrade after PS4 ends its support.

Probably not going to get him to come back and play but nice to know he watched a little of it.

the environmental graphical update is much better than the character ones

You can never go too drastic with an update like this. They even explained why like a year ago.

I expected this and I'm honestly more happier than if they did a total overhaul, most of us mmo people are attached to our characters and for them to "drastically change" might do more harm than good, so this more high poly smoother faces imo is better than say if they went and upgrade to bdo graphics.

NOW the REAAAAL question is if they updated their feet from boxes to actual feet model.
