I've been owning one for about 10 years now. Her name is Fluffy. She is super chill and doesn't even hide that much. She's also never thrown her hair at me. She's even scared of big feeding insects (She retreats when a grashopper approaches and doesn't like cockroaches, so I only give her crickets). But for some reason people are scared of her. Poor Fluffy.

I had one of these, she was such a sweetheart and I felt she actually developed a tolerance to my presence. She was as majestic as an actual tiger, I adored her and feeding her was always entertaining. She was with me for 5 years but a failed molt took her. RIP nancy

For any potentially new tarantula keepers here, I strongly advise against screen lids for most tarantulas. They have little “claws” on the end of their legs that allows them to climb and such and they often get stuck in screen lids and a fall from that height could easily damage your tarantula. I recommend using an acrylic enclosure or covering the screen with plastic or foam board maybe! Good luck!

I have 11 tarantulas of 9 different species. I personally don't handle because they drop risk and I don't want to get into a habit of using my hand to try stop a bolting spider. I already have two with medically significant venom and are planning to get a few old worlds in the future. Love that you covered some of the risks to tarantulas like falls and crickets.

One way to get around the cost is to buy a spiderling, because the brachypelma genus (which the red knee is part of) is notoriously slow growers which means a higher price for larger specimens because it can literally take years to reach juvi stage. But that means you're the one playing the waiting game, not the seller. Another alternative is to look at various different species and see if any others take your fancy. I've heard the postage in the US for online suppliers is super high, so definitely a good shout for checking expos.

I have been keeping tarantulas for over a year now, and they are so fascinating! I currently have 19 of them, 18 different species. I had to get two Brazilian blacks because those are my favorite lol. My first two were the Mexican red knee and the curly hair. My red knee is still a tiny sling so it doesn’t have those beautiful colors yet, but it’s so cool watching them grow. They are the easiest pets I’ve ever had. Be warned! This is a very addicting hobby, and I have to restrain myself from buying more lol
