People of Europe are a vital part of Canadian history. In the past and also the presence, they formed and are still forming the country's multicultural image. We see also more and more immigration from Europe due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But even though, every ethnic group played their own important role in the formation of this, probably unique, society, there is one community that had, in addition to the English and French, an outstanding impact in Canada’s past: The Germans.

Whenever Europeans set foot on the North American continent, the German element was almost always represented. In Canadian history, however, it was essential. Whether with Cornwallis at Halifax, Simcoe at York or Helmcken in British Columbia, Germans were much more than merely popular as immigrants in Canada. They can be marked as a charter group within the Canadian history.

“Germans In Canada” is an important documentary that sheds new light on a part of history in Canada that everybody presumes to know but is obviously not. There are a lot more accomplishments of German origin than the most Canadians would expect – a story that needs to be told.

Family immigrated from Germany to Canada in 1852. This summer I’ll be the first one to good back for a visit.

9:30...free land. The newly arrived European immigrants were shocked to find huge acreage of unsettled prairie land. Those early years were more tough than anyone today would know, as they (German and Ukrainian settlers) more than likely lived in tents before building rudimentary farm houses.

Wonderful video, nicely blending personal stories with historical background. I hope to visit Pier 21 again (we arrived there from Bremerhaven after WW2) now that it's a museum.

I was told when I was young that one of my great-grandparents was half german and half polish. I found a census from the 1910s that had the family on it, and they had actually written prussian on the census. I was hoping this video would give some insight as to why it would say prussian, instead of german.
