The thing is, I remember knowing how to do these and derive at the answers as a kid but nobody ever told me how to apply it to something related to real life. I felt that it was part of a flaw in the education system where I come from. But maybe it is just me. Who knows? I liked maths but was never that great at it. I'll get all excited learning new topics but then lose interest coz we just "do the sums" and move on to the next topic. Handling exams and knowing how to tackle the sums were top priority.
