NASA has identified a rapidly growing black hole that was long considered a critical "missing link" to the early universe. Dr. Jennifer Wiseman, a senior astrophysicist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, joins CBS News' Lana Zak to discuss the latest discovery.

It's interesting how the animation accompanying the interview shows relativistic effects like gravity lensing without explaining what's being shown. I also find it amusing that this rapid growing happened more that 13 billion years ago, but the implication is that this is taking place now.

Must be incredibly big and powerful to emit light that can be picked up by even Hubble 13, 6/7 billion years ago. Looking to when the James Webb telescope comes fully online so maybe better details for this will be available.

I just missed everything she said but I did enjoy the feeling of someone intelligent and kind speaking. 😁👍❤️
I'll listen again

3:30 she omits that we are in a multiverse

So it’s basically a full-blown black hole now even though the light we see shows it forming back then

Anyone getting "Don't Look Up" vibes from this newscaster?

Glad to see that the Hubble space telescope is far from obsolete! Now that we've got the James Webb telescope deployed, I can't wait to hear about what they find next. The more tools, the better! From what I gather, anytime one looks up at the nite sky and observes a star, one is looking back toward the big bang-at least in terms of time-anywhere on the earth that the star is observed. But in terms of where the big bang originated in the cosmos-there is no center. Hmmm...that's a little bit harder to get ones head around. That concept-where in space could the big bang have originated-I would imagine that that idea must be connected to the assertion that there can be no "origin of coordinates"...of some special " reference frame" out there, relative to which everything in the universe moves. I guess that that is also why they say that there is no identifiable locale in space, where the big bang suddenly happened. But these black holes now...the existence of these seems to be a scientifically accepted fact-i.e. based on all of these observations made by advanced telescopes like the Hubble.

Actually astronomers are known for naming. Cars are named after many astronomical things.
The Mitsubishi Eclipse, the Chevy Nova, and many more.

When we look at the stars, we are looking into the past; you could see two stars, next to each other, two stars that no longer exist, and two stars that never existed at the same time. And yet we see them, in the sky, side by side.

Everything is fine my fellow floating rock monkeys! It's an incomprehensible distance away! 😂 This is something to inspire awe not fear! 🤩

Astronomers: "astronomers aren't known for our poetic naming"

Biologists: "it plays a part in limb development, let's name it the Sonic Hedgehog Gene' 😂 real gene

Also biologists: "well we already have genes named Smurf 1, Surf 2, Dreadlock, Dunce, Elmo, Nemo, Pokemon, Spock and species named Gekko hulk, batmani, Thanos, Thunder Beast, Ladella spocki, Anelosimus biglebowski...and GluSnFR (Glutamate-sensitive fluorescent reporter ) aka, "glue-sniffer"."

How did it go unnoticed for so long? It's a black hole- in space.

James Webb Space Telescope will break new ground in science.

... In about 40 years. 🥺
