PS5 Consoles Will Be Sold Out For Years

While Sony is working to address the short supply of PS5 consoles I think there's going to be a continued struggle to buy them for years. PS5 Console Sales have a very ambitious target to hit so while a new chip is being worked on we still don't know if that will even solve the supply problems plaguing the industry for years to come.

They should set up a system where people can get a pre-order number and a time for pickup at local stores (1 per customer) so online scalpers can't get them in bunches.

The PS5 when restocked needs to get to the physical stores. The online scalpers/botters are the problem. I Don't believe the PS5 even exists at this point.

Possible solution: Make consoles in store only and must have valid ID or store account to purchase. Only one console per customer. Check ID or account to see if person already purchased once.

This is why I said the next generation didn't even start yet. Even after the shortage calms down developers and publishers of games are going to use this shortage and pandemic as a built-in excuse to delay games. Even before all this went down there were massive game delays and now they have a built-in excuse. And there going to use this excuse to keep this generation longer by years I'll say 10 or 11 years.

This shortage lasting years could effectively stagnate or even kill the next gen. With so few ps5 systems in hands of customers, game development for next gen is slowing down and many times being ported over to current gen. Many devs are jumping ship to NIN because they are available. It is a mess and could change gaming landscape forever.

It’s funny to me because companies are the ones that will suffer long term when no one buys games on launch day because no one has a console because scalpers bought them all

Thank god I got one while I could. I'll guarantee you they aren't releasing a slim model anytime soon. But as of right now there isn't many games to justify getting one in my opinion unless you just really want one like I did.

A playstation redesign I don't feel will make a difference in terms of production. Part of the reason there is a supply shortage is not just because of the chip manufacturers, it's also an issue in silicon supply. So not only do you need lead time to get the supply of the raw materials for the chipsets, you then need to ramp up production from there. Going to a smaller fabrication can be useful, but I don't see it really affecting time to market timelines for new consoles. By the time this goes into effect, I bet a lot of the chip shortages will be clearing up (which is est. some time in 2022).

By the time these consoles start selling in high numbers again, they'll probably be better versions of their original counterparts, due to updates, fixes, and even redesigns like in d case of ps5

i apparently made the best investment ever since buying my pc a year and a half ago, its only gained value since then bc of the shortage
