The first tip for me doesnt make sense whenever I hear it "draw from real life/study real life" what many of these pro artists doesnt say is that you need to study /observe function form and depth. If I had found the draw a box and fit the object inside videos sooner It wouldnt have been so confusing. Im not a proffessional, but I think that "learn to breakdown complexity into its base forms" is way more useful than "draw from real life".

Yep... automatic drawing is without thinking basically... just like closing your eyes and letting your hand move on the page on its own.
Great exercise to break the ice and get your hand moving before actually doing a drawing - my opinion obviously :).

Clear thinking friends like you are a treasure. You could insert any topic and yr honesty applies the same simple truths to all. Wish ii had a wider circle of connections like you Pete, for real for real.

😂😂😂😂😂. So glad I found your channel. I’m in my car doodling and laughing my head off. Keep doing what you’re doing. I absolutely needed this. What a breath of fresh air you are. Thanks mate.

In the case of the misnomer "automatic drawing", I think part of the issue is that people want to avoid using the word "doodle", as many find it infantilizing. There is so much bad communication in the art world. Excuse me... the world. Thankfully there are people like you out there.
The thing that drives me crazy and makes me mad is when artists, especially musicians, talk about "cheating".
Apparently, cheating at guitar is using alternate tunings and effects pedals etc. I hear the same thing with drawing and painting, as if extended technique is somehow dishonorable.
It really hurts people to accuse them of cheating. It hurt me for a long time, because I was dumb enough to listen to people.... and I'm an experimentalist. So of course I do things differently than other musicians. But I don't cheat. I explore. Did Jimi Henrix cheat by using a marshall stack and a fuzz pedal? Does Chuck Close cheat by using a grid? Did Vermeer cheat by using a camera obscura?
If so, ALL HAIL CHEATING!

I really like the way you not-teach, kinda like ‘this is how I do it but this isn’t the only right way and feel free to find *your* right way.’ Of course, being the exception to everything, I can come up with a million ways to do something someone has said not to… *snicker* I enjoyed watching your birds feeding from a basket until they weren’t birds anymore. Or a basket of feed. And still I watch as it morphs into something *other*. I love *other*!

In regards to the photo vs. life concept, the idea isn't that you CAN'T learn from a photo, but it does create a cycle of flattening an already flat image. Seeing how light, shadow, and form exist in dimensional space allows for a better understanding of how to replicate it onto a flat surface, than just copying shapes. Not to mention that photographs are never a 1 to 1 representation of how color behaves in the human eye when looking at things like atmosphere. Additionally even for fantasy art, having practiced things like color, value, and form from life drawing will help an artist of any level better understand how things should look to seem believable.

The automatic driving analogy killed me. My ghost is writing this. I dont think I need to worry about smearing paint with my whole arm anymore lol

About the drawing with pen part, I know people that are so uncomfortable leaving a mess on the page that their rough sketch doesnt look rough. Imagine if I tell them to sketch with a pen...

Drawing with your whole arm doesn't involve dragging your arm through wet paint and accidentally adding extra marks everywhere? Man I've been doing something wrong

Hey Pete.

Very nice drawing. I personally don't like the white part so much. But that's not meant badly and a matter of taste.
I think I will use it as inspiration for my next, my own drawing. Then post it, as always on Instagram and probably I will probably mention you there ;)

I’ve checked out automatic drawing and I don’t get it. I tried the other evening and all it did for me is make me feel uptight and nervous. I guess I have to have “something”. LOL
