The fact that rabies was glossed over so much, but we were taught about fucking quicksand. I come across way more wild animals than I do quicksand

So what I'm hearing is we should have participated in Micheal Scott's race for rabies awareness

IMPORTANT FACT: Rabies is only this fatal when symptoms start. So if you get bit by an animal, just assume it had rabies and go get the rabies shot right away before symptoms start.

I seen a child with rabies. 8-9 yr old. It was the saddest thing i EVER seen. Had severe symptoms. She was not one of the lucky ones. It's been almost 30 yrs and It is still BURNED into my memory. I cry for that lil girl at least once a year. I'll never get over that.

Rabies is literally one of my greatest fears. Just the idea of knowing that once u get but it’s almost completely over for u. Plus it’s a slow agonizing death.

When you said "They done test" for a second I thought they just full on released rabies in that town and just waited to see if there are gonna be any survivors

I think that's Jeanna Geise. If that's the case then, yes, she really is a rabies survivor. She contracted rabies from a bat when she was a kid and didn't know it until she began to show symptoms. Her very determined doctor saved her life. And, wonderfully, there she is alive and well. It's a really fascinating story, you should look it up, Hank!

The other thing to remember is that survivors often don't make a full recovery. They may suffer various levels of neurological damage. Rabies is really not good.

The majority of survivors are those who got the anti rabies treatments, BEFORE the onset of symptoms. I grew up in the deep south (US) in the fifties and it was something that people really feared. These days people think I am Being about that.

Rabies is the only thing that genuinely terrifies me.

Tons of people don't know rabies has essentially a 100% fatality rate. We were talking about this at work recently. Some thought it was 50% or similar numbers - still high, but not even close to 100%.

If in doubt, don't hesitate. Get the shots immediately!

Thank you THANK YOU for spreading awareness about this. I was utterly horrified by how unknown this fact was when I found out. As soon as you see symptoms, it’s already too late. It breaks my heart; and seeing footage of people who reached the hydrophobia stage is even more heart wrenching because you know there’s nothing they can do to feel better.

But anyways now I have literal nightmares about having to walk past wild animals or having wild animals approach me and try to bite me because this fear is so deeply engrained in me now.

This girl (in the video) survived rabies from Wisconsin. I also live in Wisconsin and remember hearing about it years ago, it was a big story. She was the first person to survive rabies without a vaccine. I believe she was from Fond du lac.

Thank god for people like Michael Scott who are really taking a stance against this silent killer

Michael Scott’s run for awareness of rabies makes so much more sense now 🙏🏽

She actually is a rabies survivor - the first ever known. She caught it by playing in the back of a church while there with an adult attending service and discovering a tiny bat. Her doctor was incredible and determined to keep her alive so her put her in an artificial coma and developed a treatment protocol.
There she sits over a decade later.

I remember getting rabies shots as a kid. I have absolutely no idea what kind of animal bit me, no memory of that part AT ALL, but what I do remember is being terrified of the shots and the doctor giving me an even more terrifying explanation of the death I would have without the shots.

She was actually the first person documented by the hospital to get cured from rabies

Had a dude at work pick up and get bit by a bat. He didn’t think much of it. Luckily one of my coworkers knew about rabies because I didn’t know it happened and everyone else thought it was funny till they looked it up. I work with idiots and I’m their boss. Idiot boss. Once I learned it happened I sent him to the er and he was treated. He’s fine. But thank god for that one guy.
