I love the Alert notice…I’ll be using this respectfully. Thanks Devon for bringing this to our attention 👏👏👏

I use Family Search more than any other website. In particular I use the Non-Indexed Italian records. For the most part I have not been that interested or considered taking the time to mess with the Family Search Family Tree. I was mostly interested in doing my own research and maybe add a little at a time later on in that tree. But, some recent experiences has made me look at it in a new way.

When I first started doing genealogy I was 39. Now I am 62. Some of my contemporary relatives (such as first cousins) and those of the previous generation (aunts and uncles) have passed away. I myself have some health problems and we know where this can eventually lead. I was looking at the tree and there was glaringly wrong information. "Nonna" (my mother's grandmother) was not in the tree at all. My great-grandfather, Ignazio, married two sisters. First he married Giovanna. She died and then he married her sister, Ida ("Nonna"). Ida was my grandfather's mother, not Giovanna.

I think I am of the generation that we just take it for granted that Ida would be remembered and there would be no reason to take the time to find documents to prove she existed. I remember her and she died in 1976 in Joliet, Illinois. And it is common family knowledge (and we have the documents to prove it) that she was Ignazio's second wife and that Giovanna had the first 3 children: Bill, Libby and John AND the rest (including my Grandpa, the youngest) were Ida's children. But the tree doesn't have the other children.

But there was that connection from me to my mom to my grandpa then to Ignazio and Giovanna and then to Giovanna's parents (also Ida's parents of course). But no Ida. That just amazed me. But I remember her and others in my family remember her. But, that doesn't guarantee that anybody else would know that. And as I get older I start to think how the same logic can be applied to my grandparents, my parents, myself and my siblings. That without documentation to prove existence eventually those with the memories of living people will not be around to prove that they existed.

So, I decided to focus on working on the Family Tree and I found some documents that prove Ida's existence, prove she was my grandfather's mother, prove she was Ignazio's second wife, etc. So I found some links to documents in Family Search and created an ID for Ida and added her as my grandfather's mother and also found some copies of documents that I have to further prove her existence and relationships and I've started adding those to the tree.

I also noticed in some cases in the Italian ancestry that there are persons missing, dates missing and/or no Sources attached. And I have the ability to correct or add those items because I've seen the documents (mostly in the Non-Indexed Italian records) and have made specific research notes citing their locations: Microfilm numbers, Microfilm titles, Exact frame numbers, etc. So I can easily find them and attach them as Sources. I also like the "Collaborate" section. I think I may be using that to discuss more of the information which is illustrated by more than one document -- sometimes in different locations due to the tendency for Italians to move quite a lot within their general areas.

So, I have changed my opinion about contributing to the Family Search Family Tree and decided to focus more on doing that. In fact, last night I made a Word report listing the major vital events (births, marriages and deaths) of ALL of my known direct Italian ancestors chronologically from 1788 to 2014 (when my grandmother died -- not Italian but married to my grandfather whose parents were both born in Italy). And I am comparing my notes there with what is in the Family Search Family Tree that others have contributed to already and seeing what is missing or what is incorrect and having a plan to fix that.

I'm new to FamilySearch so I'll be coming back to reference this video to help me get acclimated. Thank you so much.

I'm not sure whether I'll like single or double as FS is not my main go-to, BUT I'm loving the settings freedom! I've done Ancestry for probably 30 years and am nearing the end of middle age, so I struggle with FS despite having done workshops on how to use FS and your vids. I'll keep slugging along though as I've still found genie gold on FS.

A year ago I commented on one of Ancestry's that they really should add a relationship called ' in servitude ' so I'm happy familysearch has added something similar.

The old version of the page will go away sometime early in 2023, there are still a few. occasional issues where you may need to briefly switch back to complete a task so if you run into one, send feedback to tell them there is a tech glitch involving the action you need to do and they will work on it. They did that quickly with one I had a month before this comment.

Wow! I’ve learned so much! Even though the video is old, there is so much I never knew. Excellent video and brilliant delivery by the lady. In use all of the main Family Tree sites, FamilySearch is my favourite.

Thanks for the event ordering tip. However, the events listed vertically do not cover the whole area, they are left adjusted and leave a big blank area to the right, and rather than extend the event description into that blank area, they truncate it and force you to click to view the whole description/sentence. My wrist doesn't want more clicks!
I also notice a change on the MEMORIES page. They are no longer organized by "photos" and "documents", although there is a filter tab to change the "view" (e.g, see only photos, see only documents). I guess you have to flag them as "photos" or "documents" when you upload. I have yet to add any new ones. You can also arrange memories by date now, and the chronological order stays for all your profile views until you change it to something else. Everyone can view things to their own preference.

Hi Devon and Andrew! Do you have any tips on talking to older relatives this Christmas? I don't want to be bothersome to them, but if a cool story does come up, I want to be able to record it, either the audio or written. Every Christmas, I go in with a list of questions I want to ask when I see my older relatives but I don't want to detract from the real reason we gather to celebrate. Any tips? Would love to hear your thoughts in an upcoming Q and A. Merry Christmas!

The Alert notice is great, something i needed about 18 mos ago! Someone who thought they were being helpful updating a few of the ancestor profiles I had created, but without any records and instead wreaked havoc. Changing relationship from husband/wife to brother/sister, moving a child from the correct parents to a different/incorrect set of parents, etc.

As much as I'm excited to hear about the Alert notice, is it possible for someone to edit a profile *without* seeing the Alert notice?

I think there's more than one person with the same first and last name, too. I'll check out this change to the Person Page.

I’d like to hear about the App. I mostly use the app and I know I’m missing things, but I can’t get to a PC at night on the couch! 😂
