How to transfer your family tree data between FamilySearch & Ancestry

How do you transfer information between FamilySearch and Ancestry? There are two ways. One depends on your membership in the LDS Church. The other uses a RootsMagic or a similar program.

Slight correction - GEDCOMs can be imported into FamilySearch Pedigree Resource File in one transfer. And then into Family Tree (one record at a time). As stated in the video, GEDCOMs cannot currently be generated or exported from FamilySearch Family Tree.

As of last week this feature is not working. (Using "Compare") Names and dates transfer but sources do not transfer from Ancestry to Family Search. Even when you create a new person on Family Search the sources are not transferred. This is a BIG PROBLEM.

I have a question. I have a number of Italian ancestors on FamilySearch with sources that are only available on FS. Would your method in the video allow me to get all those sources into Ancestry? Some of these are attached in FS to as many as six people (e.g., marriage records that list the bride and groom as well as both sets of their parents). One thing that drives me nuts about Ancestry is that if you enter a source manually, you can't attach it to more than one person. Would RM help me with this? Many thanks.

This video is a little old but I have a question. I have successfully done all the steps you showed. The one question I have is: what if multiple people have been changed on Ancestry.com. For Ancestry it will tell you before syching what has changed. But how do i filter the results in RootsMagic to know folks I need to upload to Family Search? I'd prefer not to write down every person I change in order to find them in RootsMagic

Familysearch doesn’t FORCE you to add your reasons, except when you decide someone is dead and try to input that if FS hasn’t already decided they are. For everything else you don’t have to input the reason, but you CAN.

I remember gedcom files. They hail from stand alone PAF program. Not a great format from an IT perspective. Kind of like ancient dos files.

Hello Devon! Great video! However, wanted to ask you if RootMagic also works for transferring the tree from MyHeritage to FamilySearch, since I do not see any icon in RM but the ones for FamilySearch and Ancestry. I really need to transfer my info from MyHeritage. GRACIAS MIL! Leyda

Unless Family Search has changed their policy, anyone can edit your tree without your permission and for that reason, I will not put my tree on their website. I have worked to long and hard on my tree for someone to make changes just because they don't agree with my research (even though accurately sourced). Just saying.

I have an LDS ancestry membership on ancestry so I will be able to contact people and do research on deceased people and ancestors so I don't have to pay anything so I got lucky. Everybody who is a member of the LDS church gets lucky for it.
