Epidural Injection - Lower Back Pain Treatment and Relief

An epidural steroid injection (ESI) is a minimally invasive procedure that can help relieve neck, arm, back, and leg pain caused by inflamed spinal nerves due to spinal stenosis or disc herniation. Medicines are delivered to the epidural space, which is a fat-filled area between the bone and the protective sac of the spinal nerves.

Pain relief may last for several days or even years. The goal is to reduce pain so that you may resume normal activities and a physical therapy program.

Many patients experience some pain relief benefits from ESI. For those who experience only mild pain relief, one to two more injections may be performed, usually in 1-4 week intervals, to achieve the full effect. Duration of pain relief varies, lasting for weeks or years. Injections are done in conjunction with a physical therapy and/or home exercise program to strengthen the back muscles and prevent future pain episodes.

A steroid injection includes both a corticosteroid and an anesthetic numbing agent. The drugs are delivered into the epidural space of the spine, which is the area between the bony vertebra and the protective dura sac surrounding the spinal nerves and cord

Corticosteroid injections can reduce inflammation and can be effective when delivered directly into the painful area. Unfortunately, the injection does not make a herniated disc smaller; it only works on the spinal nerves by flushing away the proteins that cause swelling. The pain relief can last from days to years, allowing your spinal condition to improve with physical therapy and an exercise program.

Most patients can walk around immediately after the procedure. After being monitored for a short time, you usually can leave the center.
Typically patients resume full activity the next day. Soreness around the injection site may be relieved by using ice and taking a mild analgesic (Tylenol).

These only provide short-term relief - if they work at all for the pt - and doesn’t correct the root cause of pain.

Had mine done the other day, In my lower back for pain relief, First time. The only thing I felt the most, was intense pressure in the lower back (which is normal anyways), but then I equally felt it in the top left part of my leg, it didn't go below the knee. Which I was curious about, because it didn't do it anywhere else just in those two sections. But didn't question because I was focused on getting it over with😭. The only thing after is I saw a bunch of floaters, sitting up afterward, and then felt a little dizzy. But it got better I was given water and checked on twice before I gave the clear that I was fine ☺️.

I just had this done for the first time. They could not reach the area and had to go under it. This is very painful unless you are the perfect picture. I started w a headache about 8 hrs after injection. I slept very little and woke up crying. My back is the same as before the injection. They say it takes up to a month to start working.

I had a transforaminal injection last Wednesday, the 20th for my L4/L5 causing wild sciatica and have been bedridden and not been able to stand for more than 5 mins since before intolerable sciatic pain and lower butt pain and hamstring discomfort (new symptom) sets in. Procedure itself was textbook and doctor is very experienced. No symptoms of dural leak or weakness or numbness or tingling aka nerve damage. I was walking 15, 000+ steps a day for the last 10 weeks without issues and my only issue was sciatica and sitting for long periods. Doctor thinks the epidural irritated my nerves and I’m now on a medrol pack. A second shot was suggested two weeks from the first but I’m so nervous about it irritating my nerves again and causing the same debilitation. Any advice?

Why is this on social media? Do you’re job, do it well, treat people as patients and not a number, quit making it about you.
