Incase you didnt know, samurais that used an odachi normally had an assistant to help draw a nodachi. No they didnt ditch the saya if they didnt have an assistant, they would normally carry a wakizashi or katana as a back up (mostly a katana as they were perfered for open combat)

This were meant to be drawn throwing the scabbard away, not lifting the blade from it like a katana, in alternative they would have another person pulling the scabbard off or pulling it off from a mount scabbard.

If you choke your hand up under the guard while the sword is sheathed, then squeeze, it should push the sword far enough out of the sheath to break the seal, making drawing easier/ safer.
