Sarah Smith shares the heartbreaking story of navigating her mother’s journey with Early-Onset Alzheimer’s disease. Sarah’s mom, “Beauty,” was full of life, strong and independent. When she began slipping mentally, she and her husband tried to cover up the problem, and Beauty refused to go to the doctor for years. Eventually, Sarah’s dad had to ask for help and that led to many emotional, physical and spiritual challenges for Sarah’s parents and family. Sarah found comfort in God’s abiding presence, even when the stress and struggles with Beauty seemed overwhelming.

Thankful you are discussing this subject. My parents came to live with us four years ago. Parts of this situation has been very difficult as we watch their mental and health decline. But as my husband and I watch our 4 teenage children who are still living at home step up and help take care of them and fix meals. It is rewarding. She is so right about clinging to the Lord and his word as we walk this road. It is what gets you though. Thank you for talking about this.

Thank you for sharing. I’m going through the same thing with my parents. My mom has about a 3 minute memory. My dad is the most patient loving man I know. Our faith in Jesus Christ and His strength given freely to us, gets us by.

Thank you so much. My mother was a dancer as well. She has late stage Alzheimer's but I would like to incorporate some dance moves into the simple ROM exercises I do with her arms and legs. It's been so hard to find a physical therapist who has a dance background or who knows how to incorporate any dance or even music and rhythm into her exercises. I believe that some simple, dance like movements with her arms would really improve the quality of her life, even if not the quantity. I am also struggling with my faith and hope that it can strengthen and I hope that my mother will go to Heaven.

Alzheimer's and dementia: malnutrition, vitamin D deficiency, stinginess, no curiosity and kindness, laziness, stupidity, lack of exercise, religious belief, dishonesty, idolatry.
