So winning the NBA would make you the NBA Champion and since that’s the top league, you can call yourself the Basketball Champion of the USA.
Winning the Olympics would make you the Basketball Olympic champion.
Winning The Basketball World Tournament would make you the Basketball World Champion.
It’s that since. In boxing the USA also consider themselves the World Champion. The world is larger than the USA.

Americans generally do tend to believe they are the center of the universe for most things and are humbled when truly challenged by the world, but with basketball they might be right.
