Asylum seekers are to be sent 6,000 miles to Rwanda for processing under government plans to tackle Channel crossings.

Charities have warned the "cruel and nasty decision" will not only fail to address the issue but "lead to more human suffering and chaos" and cost an estimated £1.4bn.

Sky Correspondent Shingi Mararike has more.

If this actually happens it'll be the best thing that's happened in this country for years

Surely an even better plan would be to carry on letting asylum seekers to come to the UK and just ship the rest of us to hotels in a sunny destination!

Denmark also have the same system and the number of people claiming asylum in Denmark has dropped to levels not seen since the 1980s . So the argument that this will cost more money than processing their claim in the UK doesn't hold up because this is a system that does stop people who do not have a genuine claim to asylum claiming asylum.

If the charities are so concerned, let them pay for them in full and if they can't deport them.

Beautiful. I will be so proud of UK govt if its implemented. As an ethnic minority myself. I feel this is the only solution to stop the abuse of the immigration and asylum system.

Let’s be honest a great move by the Government on this issue ….. Once the word goes out that those paying big Bucks to traffickers NOW with NO guarantee in staying in the UK THIS WILL DRAMATICALLY reduce the number crossing the Chanel illegally…. This should have been done a long time ago …… No doubt we will all see the box tickers coming out protesting on this decision BUT TUFF LUCK ???

Or we could use the money to speed up the whole process dramatically and then escort anyone rejected back to their country of origin.
It takes around 3-6 months minimum for us to make a decision and this is why it costs so much.
Remember this burden only applies to those who are not genuine asylum seekers.
Reduce it to 1 month, send the chancers back home and welcome those who have fled war or persecution for a better life

Its amazing all the countries they passed through to get to the UK weren't safe enough though huh

I bet this will be very effective at stopping people who don't have a genuine asylum claim from trying to cross, if they're kept in the UK it becomes very hard to send them back if they get denied. If they're denied while in Rwanda they'll be scrambling to get back to their country they were supposedly fleeing.

good news, the same system worked out for Denmark, if the process happens in the UK its near impossible to get rid of them no matter the outcome but with the process in Rwanda the total trying to claim asylum will drop massively and the amount accepted can be changed by the British people, paying 1.4 billion now which would rapidly drop as less people even try to come to save on tens of billions from having to house and look after them is very worth it, finally a good move

Thank God, not before time, how much more can this beleaguered country of ours take? It’s worth every penny to alleviate this long-standing horror show, paying lip-service to the myopic do-gooder’s will eventually lead to our island nation, desperately busting at the seams

🙏🏻🙏🏻 I will be very impressed if this goes ahead. The odd boat getting over is one thing, but it’s a business now, it’s busier than the port probably… 1000 s arriving each week amd millions being spent each day in hotels. Please stop this once and fore all
