Artificial intelligence (AI) presents a "vast potential" for rejuvenating UK public services, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said.

In a speech setting out the government's plans to use AI across the UK to boost growth and deliver services more efficiently, the prime minister said the government had a responsibility to make AI "work for working people".

But the announcement has prompted questions from critics over how much time and money will be needed to make the government's vision a reality, after concerns over current borrowing costs and the pound falling to a recent low.

To be a world leader we would have to make the AI chips which we dont. we'd be totally dependant on the USA and Taiwan

For AI you need hardware, software, and energy. The chips are manufactured in Taiwan, and the software is developed in the US, UK has expensive energy. Build a few Nuclear power stations and you may be able to compete at least in terms of energy costs, otherwise a bright idea but not really feasible. The UK cannot tax Amazon, Uber, and Google in their own country, so the people are unlikely to benefit and the UK will head down to become a developing country. Decades of mismanagement and greed fuel the now evident, rapid decline.

AI would do a better job as Prime Minister than Keir Starmer

AI needs a LOT of electricity. Something we almost ran out of last Wednesday. Not very reassuring for investors!

If it truly is intelligent it will not want to come to this dump of a country

When it comes down to it. We don't manufacture any of this, and nor will we. This is the biggest non-story you will ever hear. It's the equivalent of Britain's Space Program, virtually non-existent.

I’m sorry but they would need a MIRACLE to become a leader in AI. In 2024, the UK (3rd most in the world) had 517 data centers. The US is absurdly further ahead of everyone with a total of 5, 375. Even if the UK had the ability to build enough to become the leader, where the hell would the money and power come from? They are extremely expensive and difficult to power, so I call bullshit.

To become the AI hub of the world you’d have to live and work here. Who would want to set up all that and stay in the UK right now?

The country with overloaded Victorian-era sewers becoming the world leader in AI? As if.
