CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Albert (Danny Glover) drags Celie (Desreta Jackson) off of their land, she has an emotional separation with her sister Nettie (Akosua Busia).

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker, The Color Purple spans the years 1909 to 1949, relating the life of Celie (Whoopi Goldberg), a Southern black woman virtually sold into a life of servitude to her brutal husband, sharecropper Albert (Danny Glover). Celie pours out her innermost thoughts in letter form to her sister Nettie (Akousa Busia), but Albert has been hiding the letters Nettie writes back, allowing Celie to assume that Nettie is dead. Finally, Celie finds a champion in the don't-take-no-guff Sofia (Oprah Winfrey), the wife of Glover's son from a previous marriage. Alas, Sofia is "humbled" when she is beaten into submission by angry whites. Later, Celie is able to forge a strong friendship with Albert's mistress Shug (Margaret Avery). Emboldened by this, Celie begins rifling through her husband's belongings and finds Nettie's letters. Able at last to stand up to her husband, Celie leaves him to search for a new life on her own. A major box-office hit, The Color Purple was nominated for eleven Oscars. The film was co-produced by Quincy Jones, who also wrote the score.

This is like 5 minutes into the movie and I'm already crying by then. When the ending scene starts I'm already dehydrated.

This movie was nominated for about 12 Oscars and didn't get a single one..the academy awards can be very fucked up sometimes

This scene was so heartbreaking. Nettie was the only person that truly loved Celie and Albert threw her off the land because of her refusal to have sex with him. Albert was a nasty piece of work.

One of the most powerful scenes ever to be made in a movie. These two female actresses were unheard of and not very experienced as actors and they were able to put across this emotion and capture the audience. A masterpiece

This scene tears me up inside every time. For those who haven't seen the movie, the husband tried to rape Nettie (the one in white) who is his wife's sister (Celie, the one in blue.) Because she fought back and he was unsuccessful in having his way with her, this happened. Women had it bad back then; black women had it worse. Let's do all we can to keep from regressing to those old ways.

Wow they don't make movies like this anymore. This is too deep and requires undivided attention to understand all layers of this film. Beautiful work of art that depicts the reality of young beautiful black girls.

That scene tears me up every time! To literally tear them apart and KNOWING she had No One who cared and loved her like her sister. So sad!

Horrible man...and all because she refused to let him shag her. Danny Glover later said he hated doing this scene...I don't blame him.

The struggles of a black woman. It's sickening isn't it? Not only being oppressed because you're black but because, you're a woman as well.

I remember reading that Spielberg told Danny Glover to do absolutely anything to seperate the girls, which is why he improvised throwing the stones. It was also a really hard scene for the crew to shoot as they were all very emotional witnessing it unfold.

Desreta Jackson is criminally underrated. Her portrayal of young Celie was masterful. Such a heartbreaking performance. Her devastation in this scene never fails to make me weep.
