Phil goes with Phil and the boys from Genesis "In Too Deep".
“In Too Deep” was actually written for a British movie called "Mona Lisa" from the year 1986. It’s a story about a guy who falls for a prostitute..
Ray Cooper, who is Elton John’s percussionist and also production manager at HandMade Films studio rang up Phil Collins to see if he’d write a song for them.
Phil Collins in an interview: "The song, the melody was already there. As Ray, he rang me up...and he said: 'Did you have a song or could you write a song for this film?' At first, I said no, because we’re working on a Genesis album. But because we had such a lot of material, that maybe we could find something that would suit. So Ray sent a cassette of the film along, a rough cut, and Mike, Tony and I saw it...Anyway we were just writing. There is a song that would suit the film. But the lyrics, I just changed the lyrics so that it would work for the story. It wasn’t actually ready but it was rewritten with the movie in mind."
Thank you 🙏 Phil for so much deep high quality.

When ever I hear this song I think about American Psycho when they play it. “Patrick Bateman: Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock.”

Recorded this track onto a mix tape in December 1986 from the compilation album NOW That's What I Call Music! 8 and have loved it since then ... always reminds me of the delightful time when I completed all my subject papers for my GCE A-level Exams.

All that time I was searching with nowhere to run to
It started me thinking, wondering
What I could make of my life, and who'd be waiting
Asking all kinds of questions to myself but never finding the answers
Crying at the top of my voice and no one listening
All this time, I still remember everything you said
There's so much you promised, how could I ever forget
[Chorus]
Listen, you know I love you but I just can't take this
You know I love you but I'm playing for keeps
Although I need you, I'm not gonna make this
You know I want to but I'm in too deep
So listen, listen to me
Ooh, you must believe me
I can feel your eyes go through me
But I don't know why
Ooh, I know you're going but I can't believe
It's the way that you're leaving
It's like we never knew each other at all, it may be my fault
I gave you too many reasons, being alone, when I didn't want to
I thought you'd always be there, I almost believed you
All this time, I still remember everything you said, oh
There's so much you promised, how could I ever forget
[Chorus]
Listen, you know I love you but I just can't take this
You know I love you but I'm playing for keeps
Although I need you, I'm not gonna make this
You know I want to but I'm in too deep
So listen, listen to me
I can feel your eyes go through me
It seems I've spent too long
Only thinking about myself, oh
Now I want to spend my life
Just caring bout somebody else
[Chorus]
Listen, you know I love you but I just can't take this
You know I love you but I'm playing for keeps
Although I need you, I'm not gonna make this
You know I want to but I'm in too deep
You know I love you but I just can't take this
You know I love you but I'm playing for keeps
Although I need you, I'm not gonna make this
You know I want to but I'm in too deep
You know I love you but I just can't take this
You know I love you but I'm playing for keeps
Although I need you, I'm not gonna make this
You know I want to but I'm in too deep
You know I love you but I just can't take this
