[SONY XPERIA PRO-I ROAD TRIP REVIEW]

It was Battlestar Galactica which taught us that “All of this has happened before, and all of it will happen again.” Each year, tech megaliths like Qualcomm host huge press events in a tropical paradise. Each year, tech tastemakers flee their frozen local wintertimes to attend them. And each year, Sony builds a cameraphone that seems like the perfect tool to capture those adventures.

Even without its optional tripod accessory and magnetic monitor, the Sony Xperia Pro-I (“I” for “imaging”) leaves no doubt about the kind of customer it’s built for. It’s a phone for vloggers; for travelers who’d prefer not to carry a full-size camera. In other words, it’s a phone for me. I’m Michael Fisher; join me for a week in Hawaii as I put the newest vlogging-centric smartphone to the test, in MrMobile’s Sony Xperia Pro-I Road Trip Review!

[UPDATE] Sony offered comment on its sensor selection, which I'll reproduce in full below:

"We use the 1” sensor for many reasons, even though only a portion of the sensor is used. The benefit of the larger sensor goes beyond using the full surface area vs. a cropped portion. The only thing to gain using the full surface area would be more megapixels. You would go from 12MP to 20MP. All other benefits would be the same. The downside would be a MUCH MUCH thicker and heavier device to accommodate for the much larger lens it would require.

Benefits of using the 1” sensor:

-Using only 12MP as this image size is optimized for smartphone use and online sharing.
-Even though we crop into 12MP from the 20MP, we still use a larger surface area than a typical 12MP smartphone sensor.
-The photo diodes are MUCH larger than typical smartphone sensor resulting in greater light gathering capabilities resulting in low noise single image (vs. computational imaging) with the benefit of added computational imaging.
-Higher sensitivity also results in faster shutter speeds in low light settings reducing the possibility of motion blur due to slower shutter speeds.
-Even though we crop in, the larger sensor delivers shallow DO Far F2.0
-The larger pixels and sensor type also deliver higher dynamic range."

I love that there are still phones with normal screens with no holes in it and a jack + led and variable aperture.

10:10 I admire the fact that Sony still chooses to go with a solid bar at the top of the phone foregoing the notch or tear drop or Any such. For me it has a certain classic elegance and practicality since you can fit a whole lot of sensors in it or even some decent front-facing stereo speakers

Been using Sony phones since the Sony Ericsson days recently bought the Xperia PRO-I so far i'm impressed with it. The next model will be interesting since Sony are on the right path now with their phones improvements.

I'm typing this on an Xperia 1 ii - my friends' pixel/galaxy/iphones definitely get better shots than the 'normal' camera app, but I've got some amazing results with the advanced settings. It's like an SLR camera I can take with me, and I might even sell my separate compact point and shoot because I never feel the need to use it.
The headphone jack, fingerprint reader and absence of a notch are huge bonuses as well! Very difficult to find those features in a phone with a flagship SoC.

Love the fact that Sony brought back the 3.5 mm jack since Xperia 1 II. Love the fact that it still has LED notifications and no stupid notches. Despise the overheating (which Sonys have been known for). I also find it unexcusable how jarring that stabilization is. Why should a $1000 not have decent stabilization? I don't think that's too much to ask for non-pro users.

Man that intro game is awesome! Bring back some of the 2018 music sometime! 🎶
Your videos/reviews are seriously the best!

Not gonna lie, the footage and photos out of this phone is absolutely the best I have seen. The pixels and iPhones look so fake compared to the Sony

As someone who carries around a small point and shoot when i can't take my big camera somewhere, I am glad to see their sensors moving over once again to phones. If sony gets this right in their next model I may actually buy it.

I think that the S888 is the one to blame here. The 1 II doesn't overheat, but this year...

The cameras on high end Xperia are really in their own league, and I really like that
And the overall package is so complete.

It's never boring watching your reviews..i love how you explain things like telling a story. Great Job.. Sony did made a "Pro" phone but yeah it's not perfect like other smartphones..

Excellent video as always, Michael. I'm still daily driving a measly Xperia 10 (2019), basically the polar opposite of the Pro-I you reviewed here. I'm spoiled by the headphone jack, 21:9 aspect ratio and notchless display (even though it's a pretty poor LCD, it's still 1080p). Sony's been one of my favorites since I fell in love with the PSP as a kid. When I finally upgrade It'll probably be another Sony phone, hopefully a midrange this time.

Do Sony and others ever view your content and go "yeah, he's right!" and actually learn? Awesome video!

The heat problem is the responsibility of Qualcomm processors, but I think that Sony will find solutions to reduce the temperature as it did with the Xperia 1 iii, When I bought it, I was feeling hot while playing a game in it, but two months after its release I received an update and after that I felt that the the heat had decreased significantly and when I searched for update information I found some Chinese sites It says that the temperature has decreased after this update, in general, I hope that Qualcomm will find a solution as soon as possible for the new processors

I don't know about America or the rest of the world, but here in Japan, the Xperia is second most sold smartphone to the iPhone (being the most sold). Sharp comes third and Samsung fourth. And I'm in love with my Xperia 1 MKIII.
