Gerry and John start going over their plans to revamp one of our old boards and some of the terrain for Spring Clean Hobby Challenge 2024. The idea is to build this using inspiration from Operation Chariot, crafting a Saint Nazaire port and dock for games of Bolt Action and 02 Hundred Hours in 28mm.

In this first part of the series, Gerry and John discuss the cleaning and repair of the board as well as adding a new coat of paint to the project. They are go over their plans to populate it with World War II terrain using those from Battlefield Accessories and Sarissa Precision.

Nice to see you re-purposing an old board rather than just starting from scratch.

St Nazaire is one of those dream table builds like the Alamo that has one very specific use for one little battle on one day in history, but it’s still worth building because of the compelling story. As long as no large signs are permanently attached, it can see double duty as some other port in another place and time.

I've wanted to do St. Nazaire for years now. Good luck!

Great to see a NEW VLOG terrain building project. There have been some great ones in the past and this looks like a cool idea too. 02Hundred is a really interesting system too so very much looking forward to the bat. reps. too.

I love the idea of updating the water that's currently on the board, then creating a topper platform that can be placed over it to extend the land to cover. That stretches out the playability of the board.
For the drydock, have the cradle removable do you can "flood" it by placing a sheet of textured plastic into the dock, then replace the cradle. That would signify a slight flood. Then make another sheet that sits on top of the cradle for a deep flood. Also, make an insert platform that slots into the drydock space to turn it into more ground level. Then you can sit buildings on top of the insert to make a larger built up section of the city.
This way you can have a waterfront with a drydock, a waterfront with flooded drydock (shallow or deep), a waterfront without a drydock (modular insert into the drydock slot), or straight flat playing area for midtown fights (drydock insert and waterfront insert installed). If you make the waterfront insert into two inserts that match the edge of the drydock, then you could have another setup to extend the ground over most of the water, then have the drydock facing a smaller water area. If you do that, the smaller water area now in front of the drydock could have an insert for an elevated bridge (to let the ships out when they are ready to launch), and that elevated bridge can serve as some elevated terrain to shoot down from.
An example is the 14th Street Bridge on the Ohio River in Louisville, KY, USA. If you check it on Wikipedia, you can see the section that elevates to let boats travel under it. It was built in the 1800s, and would be fantastic as tabletop terrain.

Fantastic to see you all going back to the basics of the hobby. We all have to game on something!
The drop in flood for the dry docks will give further options, also the other drop in for the front of the board to change the aesthetic too.
Remember playing on this table in the bootcamp for Woulsung(happy days! and fond memories )
Maybe a few seconds on how you do the retexturing and water effect and the restructure of the broken bit.
Measure twice and cut once before Gerry or even Warren are let loose with sharp tools lol.
Sandbag and anti aircraft emplacements as set down terrain a great idea.
DO a plan to help keep yourselves on track guys
Some of the model railway buildings would be in keeping with the aesthetic of modern industrial you want to go for, they might also have some gantry's
Surprised LLoyd has not given his input .because you cant have too many trains lol

The u-boat in the dry dock sounds great. Make the corner damage battle damage and add a few craters on the dockside to show previous failed attempts before they sent the special forces in to finish the job.

Proper LED searchlights and streetlights would be awesome to see.

Missed your “big board builds” from back in the day,
Great vid 👍

Your table gives way to a ton of possibilities for sure. As for lights, instead of LEDs, try using the easy "Tea Cup" lights. I use them a lot for explosions (hot glue gunned filler on them), but also throw a few in a building to give that night look...plus they're super cheap and easy to use. Looking forward to what you guys come up with.

If your already thinking about droping pannels over the dry dock or water to change up the layout you could get some range out of the board would be to do up a 2x4 ft pannel to drop on the other side of the water to turn it from open ocean to an industrial canal.
