Tai Chi vs BJJ (special guests) - Standup to Takedown match!

This is a friendly practice between our Tai Chi Push Hands players and some of the BJJ grapplers that have an open may during our Tuesday night session. Coach Jan Lucanus (white pants) uses the science of pushing to disrupt the takedown strategies of more sophisticated throwing artists, then executed throws when they are off-balance or winded. It should be noted that this practice session is using Extreme Push Hands rules (full body grappling, push out of ring for 1 point, 2 points for any throw), and has no groundfighting. Therefore, the BJJ player can only utilize his standup grappling game. Learning Push Hands benefits every type of movement system, especially grappling and football.

Nice to see kung fu pressure testing outside of sanda for once.

Rare to see actual tai chi being properly used in pressure form. Thanks for this.

For those who are fans of this. Watch the video's " Tai Chi Push Hands ( Tiian Long Tai Chi)vs.Wrestling 01, 2, 03,04. There are two tai chi competitors in this one. The first won all three of his matches. The second less experienced losed 4 takedowns to 1 in the fourth match but still got the last takedown.

I love that this was gentle and friendly—it's one of my favorite things about the sport of Judo, and I suspect a factor in why it is so popular. (A serious Judoka can hurt people, but good luck getting them to talk about doing that:)

I do want to reinforce that hsingyi focusing only takes place after the hand, fist or foot has made contact with the opponent's body, putting the force directly into the opponent's body, and even in this demo there are many opportunities for potentially debilitating strikes from inside and body to body. But we can't actually apply hsingyi in a friendly match, and so sparring when including that art is an exercise in restraint, and looking for alternate application that don't bring the risk of injuring the partner. (One of the things I find myself doing often is stepping gently down into the opponent's knee to force them to the ground instead of kicking the kneecap to bend it in a direction it's not meant to bend.)

Great work and great video. Thanks to Coach Lucanus for posting!

Is white pants strictly only tai chi? I’ve never seen an uchimata throw in tai chi, though there are similar style throws in other grappling arts that particular throw is very specific to Judo.

Nice Uchimata at the end. Not sure how this is classified as Tai Chi or BJJ, but looks fun anyway

Guy specializing in standup to takedown VS Guy specializing in fighting on the ground.

I dont see any arm drags, sweep attempts, level changing for takedowns, pummeling, and no real takedown attempts at all. If that's a BJJ guy, hes a white belt who barely showed up. Heck, the tai chi guy gripped up with a

I love when I see taichi used for its true purpose wrestling.

Ha! I knew this title was click bait. BJJ doesn't have stand up techniques.

Why was there no single or double leg attempts? Or just pulling the guy down into guard? I must be missing something here?
