Iran’s New Reformist Pres. Masoud Pezeshkian Promises More Freedom, Better Relations with the West

Voters in Iran elected Masoud Pezeshkian as president Saturday. The heart surgeon and former health minister defeated hard-liner Saeed Jalili in a runoff vote held just weeks after President Ebrahim Raisi and other top officials died in a helicopter crash. Pezeshkian has criticized Iran's mandatory hijab law for women and has promised to disband Iran's morality police, as well as better relations with the United States and other Western countries in the hopes of lifting sanctions. Journalist Reza Sayah in Tehran says that while Pezeshkian spoke the language of the reformist movement, he also strived to show "he's not going to be a disruptive force to the establishment." We also speak with _Persepolis_ author Marjane Satrapi, who says "elections in Iran are a farce" and that no candidate who reaches the presidency can really challenge the system. "The president does not change a lot."

Iran's relation with US will not change unless US position toward Iran changes.

Why did Democracy Now bring Marjan? She doesn't live in Iran and it seems she is clueless about Iran.

Somehow that lady filmmaker seemed so irrelevant and angry reading what she is saying from a prepared script. I don't know maybe she is more of an actress than a filmmaker.

This woman is obviously talking based on her anger and not facts. Anyone who opposes the government is rate or beheaded? "And that's a fact" What does she get this from? Polling stations are empty? Pictures of you saw that were long lines. What is she talking about

Unfortunately your guest represents the view of the Iranian opposition abroad which is very removed from the reality of people in Iran and what's happening inside the country.

Iran is a beautiful Islamic nation and I pray it stays that way forever! Allah protect Iran! If u do not like Iran, leave it and cry “women life freedom” in other nations

Women need their freedoms everywhere not only in Iran. The first sign of the people losing power usually appears as hate against women. Hate against a woman is also most often never seen until other people lose power. Speak out about hate against women and you will be quick to see abuses of power.

Why this woman is reading from a prepared script? That means she is ingenious. The first round was 40% the runoff was 49% so she is a liar.

Dear lady what you said about leadership in Iran also applies almost equally to every government around the world especially in the western countries.

$ 14, 000, 000, 000, 000 Billion campaign contribution by corrupt us corporations does not make US elections
Fair. You forgot to insert that : on the second round after the supreme leader cast his ballot, told Iranian people to get out and vote-that would make him happy: and they did.10, 000, 000 all 10 million more voters came out, and voted. In Iran there are safety rules for the sake of nation not to allow felons to run for the office.

I am an Iranian. I voted for reform so that I can have a normal life without sanctions. So that Iran can have peaceful relations with the world. Yet this Iranian lady (who lives is Europe & is not affected by the sanctions) is asking the western governments to keep pressuring the Iranian people under harsh sanctions. Why do you hate us?

Please recheck your facts. New president is not a Kurd but in fact an Azeri Turk. He speaks Turkish when with his family, had interviews where he admitted he having Azeri Turk origins and he is proud with that. As you know Iran has a large Azeri Turk population.
