The thing that works for me, EVERYTIME, is doing a good job and actually TRYING to do a good job. Every job ive had, i just do my work, help out coworkers sometimes and eventually i will get asked about some promotion or get a raise.
As a former manager, when i see someone doing good work and they seem to care about working with us, i will try to help them whenever possible, whether its giving them a raise, or promotion, hell even approving a sudden vacation/day off or adjusting work schedule to some sudden life change (usually babysitter issues from experience), because employees like them are fairly rare and worth keeping.
