One of the most important thing about learning the rules is knowing when to break them.

In Jaws, Quint's monologue is a perfect example of telling.

I think the only time when you always, always, always have to show is when you want the reader to believe a character has a particular trait. If you want us to believe your character is kind, show us a time they were kind. If you want us to believe your villain is cruel, show them being cruel. This can be as detailed as you want it to be—hell, you can even tell us about an illustrative incident in a sentence or two and then move on—but if you want us to believe it about the character, you have to prove it. You can't get away with telling us the character is brave and then have them act like a coward for the entire book.

Other than that, I think you can break this rule as often as you see fit.

I agree and I've noticed that's a major issue with modern day TV shows and movies. They even explain plotlines that are self-explanatory rather than focusing on the important parts which develop the characters or give input to their traits
