You could also find some interesting tree leaves or cabbage leaves and use those to make impressions on the exteriors, use broken glass, flat glass marbles, or tiles, broken ceramic for exterior, too.

I made one in the shape of a mixing bowl. I am experimenting with a garden technique where I do not wish to disturb the soil such as when feeding worms. I now use the bowl on top of the garden bed to place the food scraps in for the worms to find.
