Explainer- United Nations and Decolonization: Past to Present

Since the United Nations was established in 1945, more than 80 former colonies have gained their independence. Today, the United Nations assists 17 Non-Self-Governing Territories across the globe. The Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs supports the work of the General Assembly, particularly its Special Committee on Decolonization, in the eradication of colonialism.

Puerto Rico is not self governing, the US literally appointed a board which has to pass each budget, the UN has to classify it as a colony as soon as possible.

Colonialism is still alive, not only within Pacific islands but also in the Middle East, Africa, South America and many more, it’s just done more covertly. More needs to be done and education itself needs to be decolonised. I respect the U.N. a lot and hope one day I’ll be able to perhaps work there but there’s so much that’s is yet to be done or is for some reason or the other simply ignored (perhaps it’s political interests or bureaucracy). Major reform is needed! Colonial states must payback reparations, must give back what they stole what they destroyed. Eradication of colonialism alone is not enough. There are ongoing colonial projects around the world most notable in Palestine where Israel although they broke the most amount of U.N. resolutions is somehow still doing what it’s been doing for decades without having to face sanctions or any sort of repercussions. How is this the case? Well it’s a combination of the unjust veto system, greed, political favours, and just outright evil. If the U.N. is to tackle colonialism it should tackle it in all its forms without impunity and should enforce sanctions on all states that are found guilty of aiding/supporting, benefiting and/or is involved in colonialism and imperialism.

I'd like to see the UN turn its efforts toward the human suffering in certain parts of the world continues on the colonization issue. I think we can all agree that the situation is absolutely dire and more pressing for the people who are actually tortured and killed etc, than people who are not in eminent danger.
