Maria Anna of Austria and Mariana Victoria of Bourbon were both queens of Portugal for best part of the 18th century. More than that, they were family, mother and daughter in law.

For a quarter of a century, they lived in the court of Lisbon in a proximity that went from love to hate in just a few years. Maria Anna of Austria controlled every aspect of her daughter in laws life, and Mariana Victoria resented her dippy for it.

But their relationship is much more complex than that, not only did they come from extremely different backgrounds, one was Austrian and the other one Spanish, their experiences in the Portuguese court were a clear contrast, just like their personalities.

But in the end, they had more in commune than they might have thought.

So, on this video, I am going to try to find out what was the relationship between these two women like and the causes for their feud.

As a bit of a classical music buff I would like to point out that Maria Anna of Austria employed the great Italian composer and harpsichordist Domenico Scarlatti (considered to be the greatest keyboard player of the eighteenth century)as her children's music teacher -specifically he taught Barbara who later became queen of Spain.Scarlatti himself moved to Spain from Portugal and continued his musical activities there.

I really appreciate your channel. My French isn’t, Spanish isn’t great, and my Hungarian is nearly non-existent. Your channel fills so many fun gaps that are tough to parse out in English. One historian to another, you’re wonderful!

Very interesting, thank you. People tend to think ‘they’re royal, they’re rich, they have such good lives’ but they obviously don’t, do they. Poor little daughters, sent away at such young ages to foreign lands, probably to, never see their parents again. 👵👵👵🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

There is a French movie named ''the princess exchange''
Where Maria Victoria and a French princess exchange each others in the same way. If it is a true story it is pretty sad that the same little girl lived the same thing twice...

The Austrian was obsessed with religion omg poor Bourbon princess, her family was more into funny and artistic activities than church like the Habsburgs did, your videos are amazing, i find a lot of facts that I didn't know about before, greetings

First to comment! Super interesting story. Funny to discover the etiquette in the time of José was strict, I had an image of the Bragança court and family as a very... sloppy - that's how things seemed to be under Mariana's grandson's regency and reign as king João IV.

Super interesting theme.I had already read that Mariana Vitória and her Mother in law weren't on the bestof terms but I didn't know all the details. One of my favourite Queens of Portugal. She had to go through rather difficult Times especially the 1755 earthhquake, the execution of The Távoras and the enormous influence of Pombal Over the King her husband which she resented.
