My first fountain pen was a Sheaffer School pen back in fifth grade. It disappeared after a particularly dramatic ink exsanguination. Then, a few years ago I happened on a fountain pen Youtube channel.

It's about a 100 mile round trip to the nearest big box office supply store. They had a Waterman Allure in stock. It was worth every mile of the drive to write once more with a real pen, even a modest one.

Great advice Tim, it's really important to branch out, and look at nibs that you might not have tried before. I think that is the fun of fountain pen collection is that there are so many nib sizes and styles out there that you can find that wow nib or several, that you never new existed, if you just stepped outside of your comfort zone.

I have identical pen cases and differentiate them with colored ribbons on the zipper pull.

Good interview, Joost. Always nice to see Hemingway Jones on your channel. I agree that writing with a fountain pen, in some unique way, improves handwriting.

Very nice Q & A. It is funny, I have always been a writer using EF nibs and have gravitated to F and recently an M nib. They I found an EF soft steel nib that has blown me away. So, my thoughts on nib widths now vacillate. I am always looking for the right nib to matchy handwriting. It is probably why I have collected pens.

As for vintage handwriting, at one point, people had 2 styles that they used. The more formal and commonly almost identical to others, used for business and formal writing, and their more personal writing that was more for letters and day to day writing. Look at old receipts and ledgers as opposed to letters. 😁
For me, I enjoy a broad range of writing experiences. My first fountain pen was an old Esterbrook J I discovered in my folks' barn in 1983. That was when the Esterbrook was just thrown out, because they didn't have a gold nib. Funny how that's changed... Had a 2668 firm medium, and was a bit broad for my handwriting then. Imagine my delight and surprise to discover that they had so MANY different options, with the advent of the internet! Extra fine through broad, stubs of various sizes and types... (I still argue that vintage Esterbrook didn't really have anything with flex, no matter the claims.)
And flex. Though generally not something that I use often, i love to write with my 1912 Mabie Todd. As flexible as anything else out there. I've even accidentally splayed the nib so wide I'm surprised that it wasn't damaged, but it still perfoms like a champ.
Will say that I have kind of settled into the fine range, for much of my writing. I love the old vintage nibs of my Sheaffer's Balance Junior pens and Wahl-Eversharp Skyline pens. Just a joy to write with! And much wider than fine is harder to find, with those.
