Cast iron engine blocks holding thousands of horsepower and thousands of foot pounds of torque.

People are too used now to the cheap chinese cast iron that breaks of you look at it wrong. So they don't trust it. But if done right, it is an awesome material.

Foundryman here. I’m the guy who heats up the iron and pours it into your funny little shapes. By allowing cooling at a specific rate you can altar the chemical dispersion of the atoms within the lattice. Making it way stronger than you’d think it was capable of being. But old school cast iron this was almost never done and they mostly focused on production so it was easier to get another one than to make it stronger.

Some of my favorite tools are made of cast iron. I’d bet that table would be one of them if i could get my hands on one

Good cast iron can seriously freaking rock. Bad cast iron makes me turn the air blue. And it's a pain to repair. But I love good cast iron.

Being thoughtful in the materials and design is why I'm a fireball customer. These are legacy tools.

I hate the crap people give cast. We had printing presses that had massive castings 6in thick 15ft long older than some countries and still ran like the day they were manufactured. If it did devlope a stress crack artisans with mag drills would come and dove tail them back together and good for another 50 years.

Cast iron can stop tank rounds. Traveling at 1, 100ms.

With everything there is a balance in cost and Quality.
The right cast iron alloy and treatment will have it better than cheap steel.
Cheap cast iron will have it weaker than wood.
That is why Metalurgy is such an important field in modern times.
Something good is not cheap Something cheap is not good.

Sometimes better design = thicker... Sometimes not. It's like the old saying, anyone can build a bridge. Only an engineer can build a bridge that barely stands. I bet if the "poor" design was made by an engineer worth his salt, it stood up to just over the rated load... Likely a 10-20% safety margin. But if you use it beyond its rated strength and it breaks, that's not really an issue with the material, the design, or the engineer... However, if it regularly sees near or over it's rated load on normal use, that could be a blight on the engineer's record

I'd used the cast table any day over the steel.

Who says cast sucks? It's been used for the toughest of any kind of machinery for a few hundred years and isn't going anywhere either.

If cast iron sucks ... Then why do engines withstand 10s of thousands of pressure every second for what seems like a lifetime. When is because cast iron doesn't suck ... Manufacturers who cut corners suck.. and generally that's why shit breaks pre maturely

Of course cast iron sucks, that’s why they used to build fuggin enormous railway bridges out of it…. 🙄 😂
