The trick to that partially driven nail is, you load another cartridge and press down hard and straight and if you have someone with you, let them drive the hammer. Even straight vertical pressure where you minimize the leaking of pressure generated by the explosion will give you a better result every time.

Would it be safe to put the nail in first, and then install the cartridge? It seems like you do have to hit it pretty hard to get it to fire but I bet it would be safer if there was no way to shoot the nail into your hands.
